In the thread about the permanent injunction on distant networks from Dish, I mentioned that I was switching to Direct TV and applying for an RV waiver; one of the fellows there asked that I post an update on my progress, so here it is:

1. On November 6 I received a message on my answering machine from Dish Network telling me that my distant networks would be shut off by December 1. I spent the next couple of days researching a switch to Direct TV.

2. On November 9 I placed the order for service at my home with Direct TV. At the completion of the signup process I received an account number and an installation date of November 16. I then printed out the Direct TV RV waiver form from their website, filled it out, and mailed it.

3. The installer showed up on schedule and installed the system this morning. I immediately started receiving the Phoenix locals. Tonight, with no further input from me, the distants from LA and NY came alive as well. A check of my online account shows that they've added "/RV" to both of my receiver locations.

They've obviously received my application, processed it, added the distants (and are letting me keep the locals)-- all in less than a week from the day it was mailed. Can't ask for better service than that!

Moderators-- Was this thread moved from the Dish Network General Discussion? That's where I meant to post it, because it's in direct response to a request generated in a thread in that forum. Although it pertains to the process used in obtaining an RV waiver on Direct TV, it's meant to be of help to those Dish subscribers with RV waivers who are losing their distant networks and considering the switch to Direct.

If, OTOH, the thread wasn't moved and I simply posted it in the Direct TV forum by mistake, my bad. In either case, I'd appreciate it if it could be moved to the Dish Network General Discussion.

Denny, I have a few questions about how the waiver thing worked for you.

First, it sounds like this service is only costing you $5 a month...Is this correct? I know in the past you needed to pay a for a separate account for the rv, but I guess this has changed.

Secondly, when I talked to a D* CSR about this, she said that I would only receive the LA and NY stations on the one receiver that was in the RV. Furthermore, she said I would not get my local stations on the RV receiver. This makes sense to me, but it sounds like you are getting everything on all receivers, is this correct?

Finally, on the website D* says that rv receivers are not eligible for sports subscriptions, do to the lack of the phone line, but the csr said they would work fine. Do you know anything about this?

Thanks for your help...I am glad you seem to be having good luck with D* so far!

On your second point......
You would get the distant channels LA & NY, and your locals if you are within the spot beam of where you are subbed from. Once you bring the RV out of the spot beam then you lose the locals and will only get the distant channels.

1. The CSR I asked told me that the distant networks would cost $12 per month, but my online bill shows the charge as $9 per month-- which is also what the folks in the RV forums told me it would be.

2. I've heard that, too-- but I've been unable to find anyone in the RV community that says theirs works that way. I'm receiving both distant and locals on both of my receivers, which seems to mirror the experience of most RVer's. However, there are a few folks who say they only get one or the other-- they call Direct before they go on the road, at which point their distants are turned on and their locals turned off; when they get home they call again, and the procedure is reversed. I'm inclined to think these folks bring this on themselves-- they think that's the way it's supposed to work, so they make the calls-- and Direct accomodates their request.

3. I don't have any sports subscriptions myself, so I can't say for sure-- but I see a lot of folks in campgrounds watching NFL Sunday Ticket. The phone line thing is weird, some say if they don't plug in once a month they get nagged or lose service; others say they never plug in. Since I'm new to Direct, I don't know how it will work, but with Dish I never plugged in a phone line and had no problems-- however, I never ordered PPV or sports programming either.

Hope this helps!

If the guy that requested it wanted the info bad enough, he'd look in the dark side forums for the answer as well.;)

I found it, and appreciate you getting back. I'll make a point of posting links in the DISH forum to your thread. Very good to find out the "only in the RV receiver" doesn't apply.

Thanks again Denny.

Glad you found it, CABill-- I was about to leave you a private message with a pointer!

My overall experience with Direct has been good so far, with the exception of the sign up process-- no two CSR's said the same thing, deals were made by one but not honored by the next, etc. Sad to say, I wasn't surprised (Dish is no better) and just kept calling back and cajoling until I got what I wanted.

The final test will be when my name comes up on the HD-DVR waiting list. I have the name of the supervisor who swore that there will be no charge for the swap, but I'm fully expecting them to try to charge me a couple of hundred bucks for it.

Well, when I talked to the CSR she said an rv waiver would give me sd channels, and hd with the proper equipment. I faxed over the decleration of intent, and tonight they were turned on. The good news is it was fast, the bad news is that the hd feeds were not turned on...I called D* and waited on hold forever, told the csr the problem and she said, "I only deal with sd, hd is a different department, let me transfer you. Of course that department was closed...so 30 minutes wasted...I'll call again tomorrow.

James, glad to hear you got the distants on so quickly; posters on some of the RV forums I read have also reported problems with getting the HD turned on as well.
Please post how this turns out-- I don't have HD now, but will when my name comes up on the HD-DVR waiting list.

Interesting call today...

I got to the right dept. and was told that I shouldn't even have the sd channels, b/c there was no note on my account about an rv waiver...after looking around on the computer she found the note...

When I asked about hd she originally said that they were different waivers, and that the rv waiver does not apply to hd. After putting me on hold, she came back and said she could activate the hd feeds!!! The only catch is that you only get one version (congress basically put a line down the middle of the country, and all those on the left side get the west coast hd feeds, all those on the right get east coast. I knew about this, but it is still a little puzzling that you get east and west in sd, but only one of the two in hd.

So I now have all the nets in hd on all of my receivers. Technically speaking I think the DNS feeds should only apply to the rv receiver, but the CSR said she didn’t know anything about that…

I'm not complaining!!

I'd heard of the HD distant nets being restricted to the set closest to your service address, but wasn't aware of how they'd handle RVer's. Thanks for the info!
