"According to one source close to Echostar, some of the 301 and 501 recievers now have the ability to switch to a new technology and security card other than the reception and security system Echostar currently uses." "Those receivers can be used to process DTV signals."

And this is why a merger is not neccesary for reducing double broadcasts. All they really need is control to tell them to "just do it". One standard box that will use one method of transmission and security and the "sale" goes to who is selling the service or network.

I think you misunderstand a bit. The boxes can be set up to use one or the other system, not both. To use both would require two card slots which they don't have. All they are saying is that the models mentioned can be switched to DTV standard. This gains nothing in signal duplication.

I'm not quite sure I understand your logic behind this statement. How would a standard box affect what is uplinked by the two companies if they don't merge?
What this is really saying is that after the merger, these units could be changed to whatever CAS system is going to be used - not necessarily that they can be used for both at the same time.
