DirecTV is chasing Adelphia's cable TV customers in the Los Angeles area - including residents of Ventura, Riverside and Orange counties - with a special offer that may compel some to leave the troubled and bankrupt MSO for the small dish service.

Through DirecTV's special deal, customers who commit to one year of any DirecTV Total Choice package will receive a two-room DirecTV system and standard professional installation for less than $50 from participating retailers. Offerings include the Total Choice Plus With Local Channels package, which offers all Los Angeles locals for $39.99 a month.

Participating DirecTV retailers include Best Buy, Circuit City and Good Guys.

Last week, Adelphia, the sixth largest MSO with more than 5.8 million customers, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Adelphia's Los Angeles-area cable systems serve communities such as Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Redondo Beach, Anaheim, Chino Diamond Bar, Moreno Valley, Sherman Oaks and Moorpark.

As for EchoStar, the satellite TV company has been placing advertising in Adelphia markets across the country, with a message centered on rising cable TV rates. The ads have appeared in the past couple of weeks, an EchoStar spokesman said.
