Now that we know these games can run a little long, NBC Sports Network, nee versus has an MLS game scheduled about the same time the Kentucky derby is to begin. I am recording CNBC and NBCSN starting around 3 as a backup, but would they put an overtime game on to the NBCSN overflow channel, 604-1 on D*?

According to nbc sports web site, coverage of the Derby starts at 4pm EDT. And the MLS game starts at 430pm EDT. So I'd say that from 4-430pm, coverage may shift to NBC Sports Network and only if it goes past 430pm, you may have a problem.

Since you are in Chicago, I think your gameplan works. I have a feeling that in NYC metro and DC, they'll keep the nhl hockey game on the main NBC until game's over. I know people in this area bet on the KY derby a lot, but there's a level of excitement today in the office about the rangers game last night that, I am pretty sure, even a casual fan might be glued to TV on Saturday afternoon, if not for the entire game, definitvely from 3rd period on and I doubt NBC in NYC would move the rangers game away from channel 4 if game goes to lots of OT like last night.

The 4-5 hour of NBC's Derby coverage is pure fluff - fashion coverage and such. My guess is that if the hockey game went OT and beyond, they'd keep it on NBC nationally until 5, then probably shift it to CNBC (except for local markets) after that.

Actual Race time is 6:24 PM for the Kentucky Derby so unless Caps & Rangers play another triple overtime or more; IMO everything should be okay. After that all bets are off. I'll sleep well knowing that I missed the different hats that are being worn by the ladies.

NBC took a lot of heat several years ago when they moved an NHL game's overtime coverage to Versus because of the Derby. On that day, the NHL game was scheduled sometime around 3PM ET, and there was less than an hour after regulation ended before the Derby race was scheduled to take place. Since that day, NBC has always scheduled their NHL game on Derby day at 12:30PM ET, nearly six hours before the race, giving them much more wiggle room.

Worst cane scenario - all NHL on NBC games are available (live or archived with DVR functionality) at nbcsports.com, so there is an option in case you manage not to get the end of the game.

It was the Preakness and the hockey game started at 1:30p. They went until 5p and switched to the Preakness coverage (scheduled for 5p) pushing hockey to Versus.

It really depends on how their contracts are written and has nothing to do with whehter NBC would think the hockey game should stay on in DC and NYC. If the Derby coverage is for a national stage, it will be national and they will move the hockey game.

NHL network???? that will put NBC in more heat as it's in a higher pack then CNBC and MSNBC some times even higher then NBCSN.

But Cable has no way to show both NHL and MLB on NBCSN at the same time.

They can use CNBC and if needed MSNBC

Don't bet too much on that. A few years ago, they cut away from a Red Wings playoff game for the Kentucky Derby. The thought that they would cut away from ANY game before it is over is unprofessionalism period. Nevertheless, they do leave a hockey game for the Kentucky Fashion Show without a moment's regret.

You may consider it fluff, but to the advertisers who have paid for their ads and have contracts, the game would move before NBC would shorten one of the races.

Don't bet too much on that. A few years ago, they cut away from a Red Wings playoff game for the Kentucky Derby. The thought that they would cut away from ANY game before it is over is unprofessionalism period. Nevertheless, they do leave a hockey game for the Kentucky Fashion Show without a moment's regret.

As long as they switch the gm to one of their alternate outlets, I'll be ok. It does make it hard for those that are DVR'ing games though, with possible 2-3 OT gm's as we've seen in this round of gms this year.

. I imagine NBC won't allow "Heidi's Haunt" to win at the post (old-timers remembering that Jets/Raiders playoff game when NBC decided to cut to the "Heidi" Sun night movie and miss the closing moments of that playoff gm).

FWIW, the Heidi game while a great game, was not a playoff game. It was a regular season game in November 1968. The Jets won the AFL championship game at Snowy Shea Stadium against the Radiers in December 1968 which put the Jets in the Super Bowl in January 1969 and we all know what happened then.
