Looks more and more like we'll go back to DirecTV, perhaps even before we move. Once again I was lied to by the Uverse sales people, and am only getting one BTN channel and not the alternates I was told I'd get.

Since my D*Tivos are old, I'll be getting all new equipment. Is there a choice receivers to get, or just one? If more than one, which one should I request? There's also a small possibility that if we have money left over after the move, we'd get a HDTV, so might as well post what HD receiver is the best too.

You'll get whatever the installer has on their truck in that category; there is no way to specify a specific model, and no way for installers to fulfull a specific model in most cases.

Also, the Uverse installers in my area cut up as much of the existing sat cable as possible, in several cases even removing and taking customers' bought-and-paid-for dishes. Some Comcast techs do the same thing when a customer cancels; pulling a customer's coax as far out of the wall as they can, then reaching in and cutting the cables flush so they can't be reused.

I'd keep a close eye on them if you're canceling.

When I first got Uverse, I still had DirecTV, so I put two televisions side by side, one hooked up to each and the picture quality looked the same on both.

OK, I've been waiting for someone else to post this, but it hasn't happened.

Even if all you have right now are SD televisions, if you think you will be upgrading your TV(s) to HD, you should probably request HD equipment now if you can afford it. Aside from the cost of the initial outlay (which could be the same as what you would pay for equivalent HD instead of SD equipment), you would be paying $9.99 a month for HD Access. Although you wouldn't be using it for HD right now, if your HD upgrade will be soon, you would already be set up with the HD equipment you'll need from DirecTV and won't need to return SD equipment and pay again to re-acquire HD.

And as always, if you can swing the price of DVR versus just a straight receiver, opt for the DVR.

Well whats the difference, they are either going to pay for the HD equipment now or later and it will still cost 99 bucks. At least now they get a free SD box

Since he didn't know yet what equipment he would be getting, my point was that he may be able to work out a deal with them on the HD equipment now and not have to deal with it again later. Yes, he'd likely get an SD receiver for free now, but if he COULD get an HD receiver for free now - or get a deal on an HD DVR that he is happy with - then he doesn't have to deal with all that later.


ETA: It also may be six to twelve months after his initial set-up to be eligible for equipment deals again that he may be able to negotiate now.

I have u-verse now, I ordrered it to get the high speed internet and VOIP. I will soon drop the TV but the SD is as good as Directv. The HD is way overcompressed, looks very blocky
