Seattle Mariners in Hawaii

Ok, I found this site while searching for some answers and it seems like people here are pretty knowledgeable about the MLB Blackout situation. I thought I was previously, as well, but now I'm stumped.

Anyway, I live on the big island on Hawaii. According to MLB.com, I'm in the home territory on every team on the west coast (my zip code is 96749 if anyone wants to check), including the Mariners, so I can't watch their games live on MLB.tv. However, since I'm in their home territory, I thought I'd be able to watch the games on ROOT Sports NW via Directv. So I signed up, got it installed today, watched the pregame show, and then was blacked out once the game started. I called Directv and they told me that I am NOT in the Mariners home market, and thus am blacked out on their service. So who's right here? Are both of them? Does MLB have a different blackout rule for internet and TV, thus making it impossible for me to watch the games at all?

The CSR is right. Per D*'s RSN/team lookup tool you're in the market of every team in California, but NOT the Mariners. Looks like you need MLBEI for them.

Yeah, I looked at that before coming here, and that's why this is so confusing. Prior to this season, that's exactly how MLB.tv treated me. I was blacked out from CA teams but could watch the Mariners live. In the offseason they added Hawaii to the Mariners 'home territory' so that MLB.tv won't work.

Who would have thought MLB would have separate blackout lists for different mediums. I paid for MLB.tv, I paid for D* with the sports package. I'm not paying for a third thing. It's amazing MLB makes it so hard to watch their product.

Edit: In fact, looking into it further, the following sites all either say directly or imply that the Mariners are blacked out on EI as well. So there is literally no way for me to watch Mariners games live despite being in their 'home territory'.

What on screen message do you see when you turn to a live game? If it says "not subscribed" then you should be able to see it with Extra Innings (you can then dump the sports pack). However, if the message says you are blacked out then you are out of luck.

I wonder if Directv isn't aware that Hawaii was added to the M's home territory? You might try contacting Directv (via the website rather than calling a CSR).
I live 119 miles from Philadelphia & get 100% of the Phillies games on D.
On Comcast Cable here,100% of the Phillies games are BLACKED OUT on
EI,MLBN & ESPNs.Satellite & cable obviously play by seperate rules !
Many years ago,the Flyers (NHL) & the Phillies sent my local Comcast cable an
official letter that they do NOT claim my zip code.It didn't help.So I moved to D.
Moral to my story, blackout rules are archaic & they should all be revised or better yet ELIMINATED !

Blackouts for cable are determined by where the headend is.
If you really want to find out what happened, you need to contact root sports northwest. they can tell you what is going on. Secondly, online blackout restrictions are always different than the tv conterparts. When it comes to what teams are in your market they include anything and everything they think you should get. Example. NBA believes my area is part of the Trail Blazers tv market. So they block their games online, but if that is the case I should be able to subscribe directly through the blazers site for those games. Blazers website says that I'm not part of that teams tv territory and as a result says you need nba league pass. So the only way to see their games is via nba league pass on Directv because they are blacked out otherwise.

Hawaii is like Iowa now with 6 teams claiming it however not all rsn's are available there so they can miss out on the teams closest to them. I can understand most sports blackout restrictions but baseballs borders on the absurd in most situations now. Until they start losing money though it won't change anytime soon.
