Seinfeld never was any never will be in HD. The show was filmed in the 90s in the standard 4x3 format. This show and nearly every other one on TBS is just their stupid gimmick to make people believe that they actually have HD programming on their channel all the time. Most of their lineup was filmed way before HD was on people's minds.

If the show was actually "filmed" it would look pretty good shown properly on an HD channel, but I beleive it was "taped" in much poorer quality and thus would look bad no matter what is done to it, especially "stretched" by TBS.
someone at avs posted this:

A number of shows were originally shot 16:9, and 4:3 "safe". That was the case with many of the original Law & Order episodes that were never shown in HD on NBC. It is possible that Seinfeld is one of these shows. Depending upon how the original producers handled their post production. It could require entirely new HD film transfers and edits or...as with most of the L&O episodes, the production company "conformed" a 35mm film master to the electronically edited 4:3 show, then only had to transfer the edited film version to an HD tape master.

and here:

And just for clarification, Seinfeld was originally shot on film, transferred to an SD tape format, and finished in SD (1-inch analog, and later, Digital Betacam). Several years ago, the original camera negative was pulled from the vault, re-transferred in HD, and then re-edited from scratch to HD tape.

It is.

"Seinfeld" was converted to HD years ago, it's just never been available in HD anywhere yet.

Did you know that "Star Trek", "Hogan's Heroes", and "Charlie's Angels" (among others) are available, and have aired in HD? They were filmed LONG before the 90s.

BTW, HD does not equal 16x9. 4x3 can be HD just as easily (provided it was FILMED instead of taped).

i hope it is....dvr alert....the 5:30pm episode is a classic....kramer drags the merv griifin set into his apt and he is like the host with newman as the sidekick.

I'll be off tomorrow (yay!), so I will be tuning in to see what it looks like.

As I said previously, "Seinfeld" DOES exist in HD. Sony remastered them for syndication, and eventual Blu-ray release, so they DO exist and it's very possible TBS is airing them.

My only issue is that I was of the understanding that the HD versions are in the 4x3 aspect ratio (pillar boxed) and not the 16x9 aspect ratio. Could TBS-HD be stretching the HD versions?

Watching right now. I don't know if it's just me but it looks better than ever. And I noticed the opening credits look unstretched (and centered to fit in the 4:3 ratio) as does the show itself.
Indeed TBS is now airing the recently created HD versions of the show. Two HD versions were created: One 4x3 and one cropped to 16x9 -- TBS is showing the cropped version. The 4x3 HD versions were downconverted for the DVDs, but hopefully will be available somewhere, someday for those (like me) who are not fans of cropping.

At the previously posted link, you'll find some screen captures I made comparing the 4x3 and 16x9 versions, as well as some HD images. Scroll down to post #73. That link again:

SEINFELD was shot on 35mm film. Transfers were done from the original camera negative.
I won't believe it until I see it... from the home of Stretch-o-vision.

it is hd (kinda)...read in videojanitors link above.

its the 4x3 hd pic but cropped...so compared to the old sd picture:
1. slightly more picture is added to left/right.
2. slighty some of the top is cutoff.
3. alot of the bottom is cutoff.
Some of the episodes are now available on TBS OnDemand (DirecTV).
I stand corrected. I wasn't aware that the episodes were remastered in HD, but that doesn't mean that they're aired in HD on TBS. To the best of my knowledge, most programming aired on Turner-owned networks in stretched.

I haven't seen this "HD Seinfeld" yet, but I can tell you that while this used to be true (TBS was one of the biggest stretch-o-vision culprits), it's gotten a lot better with them recently. Everybody Loves Raymond and The Office are now both pretty regularly in HD (not stretch-o-vision). Stands to reason that Seinfeld and Friends would be next (to the extent it's economically viable to do so).

How about refraining from contributing until you know what you're talking about, instead of posting "matter of factly" when you are 100% wrong.

I only see three episodes in there and they're all in SD.

Agreed. The Merv Griffin episode was definitely an improvement from the old "Stretch-o-vision".
