My series manager recorded the SD version of Madmen and The Killing (both AMC shows) instead of HD like they usually do. I have it so my guide hides SD duplicates too. It's also strange that even when I am playing back the SD version, my Direct tv receiver (HR22-100) light is lit above the 1080 broadcast. I've never had this happen and I haven't made any changes to the series manager for either of these two shows. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again? Has anyone else had this experience?

Check your series link. I had a similar problem and found that my series link was set to record the SD channel and not the HD channel.
It does now say amc in small letters for The Killing, but it recorded it last week in HD and I never made any changes.

Not strange; common. The light reflects whatever output resolution the DVR is set for (unless in native mode), not the resolution of the recording or incoming video itself. For instance, if your DVR is set for 720p, any recording, SD or HD, will be rescaled to 720p. Obviously, if the original resolution was SD, the effective resolution will be no better than SD, regardless of what it is scaled to by the DVR.

A 1080p TV will see this signal, and rescale it again to 1080p, once again with no benefit or change to the effective resolution.
