I am familiar with the problem we have identified in the wish list (Record this time slot only) of a series link recording the first episode of a show rather than the later showing. For example, If you want to record Deadliest Catch at 11 PM and you set the Series Link, the next week's show will be recorded at 9 PM. This problem, however, does not then cause the DVR to record the 11 PM showing of that episode, since it already exists in the play list.

My current issue is that a Series Link is recording EVERY showing of a show even if the guide description is exactly the same, despite the recording defaults being set to First Run only.

For example, I set a Series link to record "Hardball with Chris Matthews" on channel 356. This show is on at 5 PM and the exact same episode is repeated at 7 PM, 12 Midnight, and 4 AM (all times EDT). The guide information is exactly the same for each showing. The HR20 is recording all 4 showings of the same episode every day. I am at a loss to explain why this happens.

I know "Record this time slot only" would fix this, but I cannot understand why the repeat episodes are being recorded.

Add to "the list" Dan Rather Reports. Both my HR20 & 21 have decided to record the "first run" @ 5 PM Tues, and every following airing over the next two days. Guide info is a bit meaningless "no information available".

I know what you are asking for and it makes perfect sense. The only workaround I could find is to set up a manual recording as recurring, every Tuesday and enter the time, channel and duration.

I have found that the FOXBN is very bad about not marking the guide correctly. With Dave Ramsey, it will record the show any time it is on even though I have my DVR set to "first Run Only". The fix was exactly what RACJ2 mentioned above. Set up a "MANUAL" recording for the show on the day and the exact time you want it to record. Then the DVR will only record that channel on the day and time you specify.

For me, I set the "MANUAL" record to Mon-Fri, 7pm, channel 356. Now I only get the single recording of the show and during the weekdays only.

Ditto, I have been deleting around 4 to 5 duplicates each time a new one comes out. :nono2:

Are the shows labeld news? I think that either the shows aren't haveing their serial number coded right from tribune, or the HR ignores first run/repeate info on shows that are considered news....

I just looked at the guide data for a few episodes of Hardball and it's a joke. When the GUIDE data is so poor, I believe the HR scheduler is purposely recording very instance so as to err on the side of caution, which is understandable, IMHO.

Shame on MSNBC (or TMS) for not, at minimum, inserting a "first aired" date. If they did (and DirecTV implemented another one of our Wish List requests), the HR scheduler could use that date to determine not only first run/repeat status, but as a unique identifier for "28 day rule" purposes, which would prevent multiple recordings of the same episode on the same day.

Steve, I've found that most of the news shows are like that, as are many other programs.

Suddenly I'm getting programs like Monk, Psych, In Plain Sight showing up in my to do list even though they're set for First Run only, and worked well all season.

Looks like the networks have figured out that if they don't give accurate data, DVRs across the country will record that episode. I just wonder if that has any impact on program ratings... do they count when recorded or viewed?

If it's when recorded then that would explain why some networks are reluctant or slowing down the flow of info to TMS.

As far as the news shows are concerned, I would hope that TMS would somehow figure out what time a show is first aired. I know that the first run of Hardball is at 7 PM eastern. It repeats again later in the evening and possibly again the next day. Same with Countdown with Keith Olberman, The Daily Show, Colbert Report etc. You would think that someone at TMS would at least figure that out, and flag the shows appropriately.

Just my two cents.

Yep.. Networks are getting sneaky, and its annoying... It absolutly affects ratings... Next question though is, are they actually recording, or is guide data getting updated so that they don't...

Since I am the OP of this thread and I have examined the guide data for "Hardball with Chris Matthews", I believe the problem I described is rooted there:

1. The program description does not change from day to day.
2. There is no "First Air date" included in the guide.
3. Every showing (even repeats of the same episode) is listed as "First Run."

I blame this partially on the network and partially on TMS. Apparently the network is providing very limited information to TMS, and TMS is not annotating the guide for programs on the same date that are repeats.

Although DIRECTV is not directly responsible for the error, they should be responsible to ensure the guide data is detailed and accurate, especially since their DVR is going to rely on guide data in order to determine whether or not a program is recorded.

DIRECTV: Please fix the guide AND implement wish list item "Record this time slot only."
