Sesame Street to introduce HIV-positive Muppet
........hmmmmmmmSesame Street will soon introduce its first HIV ( news - web sites)-positive Muppet character to children of South Africa, where one in nine people have the virus that can lead to AIDS ( news - web sites).
The upbeat female Muppet will join "Takalani Sesame" Sept. 30 for its third season on the South African Broadcasting Corp.
The character -- which has yet to have a name or final color or form -- will travel to many if not all of the eight other nations that air versions of the educational children's show that began in the United States in 1969, said Joel Schneider, vice president and senior adviser to the Sesame Street Workshop.
Schneider said talks are under way to introduce an HIV-positive character to U.S. viewers.
Schneider announced the new character this week at the 14th International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, Spain, where he spoke by telephone Thursday.

The sickos are in charge of childrens' programming. These include perverts, drug addicts, adulterers, witchcraft, and every other vile thing you can think of.
First of all I want to comment that please keep in mind this is for the South African version of Sesame Street, and not the American version. The reason that this is important is because the pct of people infected with HIV is 1 out of 9 children. (Or something like that). They are not teaching about homosexuality, they are teaching that you do not have to be afraid of people who are infected, but you do need to be careful.
Now on the other side of the fence, the part that really bothers me is the attention that people bring to HIV/AIDS. HIV can be wiped out of this planet if people just knew who they were having sex with and also making sure they used a clean needle when doing drugs (Or heaven forbid that stop using drugs). My wife was diagnosed with Lupus two years ago, and in the United States there are more people that have Lupus then have HIV. She did not do anything that caused this disease, she was just living her life when she got sick. When are people going to start paying attention to diseases that have no known cause or cure and are effecting more people then diseases like AIDS and HIV.
That is just my two cents.

This puppet is an orphan who is HIV positive, all it is doing is representing way tooo many HIV Positive and Orphaned children. For those who think this is sick and debased. SHAME ON YOU!!! This puppet will communicate how she misses her dead parents and how it feels to be ill often and how it feels to be shunned by society. Those real life kids should be wearing a badge of honor, not shame and if this puppet helps them, then may there be one on every version of the show.

And China's geniuses, they would have blood collection devices that would take the blood and pool it together, but much of the time the pooled blood would flow back into the veins of the donor. So the kindly chinese blood donors are dying of aids by the thousands.

and also by pure hartless thugs. I read a news strory on the net a few years ago, where some kid went to the movie theater sat down and felt a prick. There was a needle in the seat that had a note on it saying 'Congrardulations youve just been injected with HIV'. Sure enough he went to the hospital and was tested... Police say it looked like some guy got infected and was pissed off at the whole world so in rage is acted in that unthinkable manner. I havent seen no follow up story so I dont know if the guy was ever cought or how the kid is doing. There are some real sickos out there!
HIV is a really big problem in Africa (read epidemic). It they can use this to educate children over there to take precautions, then I say more power too them. Better this than bury their heads in the sand and pretend it doesn't exist.

I don't recall where, but I remember seeing a report on TV once, which explained that in Africa, local rumors or even sometimes a tribal shaman's advice to heterosexual men who are HIV positive is to have sex with a virgin female, in the sadly mistaken belief that it will "cure" the HIV or AIDS virus.

In Africa the disease is not as associated with homosexulity as it is in the US. There the disease is more a scourge in the hetrosexual community and the birth of children with the disease is an all too coomn occurence.Originally posted by Mark

I am not sure that they intend to reveal how this puppet contracted AIDs but I think it is possible that the point of the charcter is to encourage kindness and understanding not to encourage a particular sexual orientation in a country that is---to these children---foreign.
It introduces children to 'adult' issues sooner than many of them should be. South Africa is free to address the issue of HIV as they see fit, but there are rumors about adding this muppet to the American version.
Sesame Street already 'teaches' children to be nice to others that are different than them (at least that's my recollection); I don't see the need to get more specific in the American version.

Sometimes specifics are needed. Granted the Aids epidemic is a different issue in South Africa than here, but there are plenty of specific that could be addressed by a different puppet. Although I think the explanation belongs more to a Mr. Rogers than Sesame Street.
What's Next? A Revival of "Captain Kangaroo" and Mr. Moose explaining how Sex is done between a male and female? Gimme a brake!

All they say is that the puppet is an orphan who is HIV positive, I think many can assume that the child of that age represented by the puppet was not getting it thru own Consentual sexual activity. You are the ones who keep on bringing sex to the discussion when there is no sex conversation implied.
As for what Kevin said. Yes they are getting into specifics. And Sesame Street teaches "Be nice to others". If there were heavy racial tensions in the US, than having an obviously Black and obviously White puppet might make the point where the generic "Be nice to others" isn't enough. Sometimes specifics are needed to make a greater impression.

Hey Scott the monring crew on my favorite radio statio stole your idea about Burt and Ernie from the other thread Yesterday they did a complete mock out of Sesame Street and the HIV muppet (even did voice immitations and I must say they were very realistic). Very funny stuff, I won't post what they said as it can be offensive. But I immedatly though of that when the guy playing Miss Piggy made a comment.
