So the wife and I record a lot of shows, so I just upgraded to the HR34, previously I had an HR 24 and HR 23, that were networked to my router via ethernet for MRV. Now that I have the HR34 and the HR24 shouldn't they be able to MRV over the SWM without ethernet? The reason I need to remove from ethernet is because the HR 23 was used as a bridge and I could use my sling box, but now that each box only has 1 ethernet I need it for the sling box. Current setup is 5LNB dish to SWM (16), PI, HR34 and HR24 in a 1x4 splitter on SWM1. Am I missing something here? Do I need a DECA at the router? I've been looking around for this simple setup but to no avail.

No, you dont need to do anything. Both boxes if authorized for MRV, should negotiate with each other without a ethernet cable. IF you previously were using the HR24 with an ethernet cable, you may need to rerun satellite setup to jog it into switching back to DECA, and it automatically disables DECA if there is an ethernet cable plugged into it.

The HR34's ethernet port can also be used as a bridge, or you can get a Cinema Connection kit, or you can buy a power supply for one of the DECA modules if you had one from your HR23, and use it on an unused splitter port as a bridge.

Still not working. I have only coax installed from dish through swm16 and to boxes. re-ran multiple times dish setup and still no avail. Checked my account and I am being charged $3 for Whole Home DVR as well as $6 for RVU (separate question, do I need the RVU if I do not have a compatible Samsung TV).

Do you have an ethernet cable connected to the HR34? That can act as a bridge between the DECA cloud and your home network and the DECA will still work in the HR34.

Also, press and hold the Info button for 3 seconds until the Setup Info screen appears. Scroll down on each of the DVRs and let us know what the IP address is for each receiver.

You can also try re-running the network setup on the HR24.

Lastly, if you are not connected to your router and the receivers have IP addresses in the 169.254.x.x range, they can take a little bit to find each other, but they eventually will.

As for the $6 RVU charge, do you also have a $6 additional receiver fee? If not, it could be that they just coded your HR24 (additional receiver) wrong in regards to what fee they are charging you. If you do have the additional receiver fee and the RVU fee, you need to call up DirecTV and get the RVU fee removed.

Merg,
What Im trying to figure out is with only an HR24 and HR34 can't I MRV over SWM without ethernet? Or do I need a DECA adapter (which I have) and DECA Power Adapter (don't have) and connect that into my router, with only coax to the receivers and the DECA ran into the SWM16?

You do not need ethernet, or internet, or a router for MRV. If both units are plugged into the SWM16, they will eventually negotiate a connection between them. Router/ethernet/bridge is only if you want to download VOD, TVApps, and other internet stuff like YouTube and Pandora. Its not required for MRV.

You say you have an HR34 and HR24 with a SWM 16. Do you have other recievers hooked up to the SWM 16 as well? If so what models? Do you have bandstop filters on them?

because the HR34 is SWM only, and i only have the 5 lab dish. Technically the Tv's work fine the way it is. No other boxes on the lines. I let it sit for over 24 hours with re running satellite setup with no ethernet connected, still never "negotiated"

Is it a green labeled SWM 16? What ports do you have everything hooked up to?

Follow these steps EXACTLY as shown.

Start with the new HR34.

Connect the existing ethernet cable (from the old HR23) to the new HR34. Restore network defaults by:

MENU
Parental, Fav's & Setup
System Setup
Network
Restore Defaults

Exit out of the MENU structure to LIVE TV. Once you are watching LIVE TV, press the red RESET button (behind the access card door). Allow the HR34 to reboot completely to LIVE TV, then immediately run a SYSTEM TEST by:

MENU
Parental, Fav's & Setup
System Setup
System Info & Test
Run System Test

After System Test is complete, press the OK button, and left arrow to:

Network Setup
Connect Now

You should get a code 88-xxx

Now move to the HR24.

1) Ensure There is NO ETHERNET CABLE plugged into the HR24

Restore Network Defaults by:

MENU
Settings & Help
Settings
Network Setup
Restore Defaults

Once you see the message that defaults have been restored, Exit out of the MENU structure to LIVE TV. Once you are watching LIVE TV, press the red RESET button (behind the access card door).

Allow the HR24 to completely boot up to LIVE TV. Now initiate a SYSTEM TEST by:

MENU
Settings & Help
Settings
Info & Test
Run System Test

After System Test is complete, press the OK button, and left arrow to:

Network Setup
Connect Now

you should also get a code 88-xxx.

WHDVR & Inernet connectivity should both be working.

Please post results.

Good Luck!!

I would avoid the RBR (red button reset). If you want to reset the receiver, use the Setup/Reset menu option. This will allow all functions of the receiver to shut down correctly before restarting. Think of Windows and how you should use the Shut Down menu as opposed to just hitting the power switch.
