Hey all,

I have a small set-up (2 HR's and 1 H). Currently there are only 2 of us (small toddler doesn't get the remote yet) and we seem to be doing fine, but I think my HR20 is having some issues that might warrant early replacement.

If I were to compare my current setup to a setup of (1 HR34, 1 HR, 1 H) what are the major bonuses from this new set up?

i only see a couple.

PIP
Larger Storage.
record more shows at once (2 on HR20 / 5 on HR34)
record from H

What else (if anything) am I missing?

Genie but I don't really use it.

With hr34 you could switch the h to a c31 and get dvr capability there.

A minus is that dvr scheduler from iPhone and iPad doesn't work with hr34. At least not reliably. Csr's are clueless about how to fix it.

Tuners was the deciding factor for me. I need the ability to record more than 2 shows at a time on one box. I am glad I took the plunge. Not looking back.

Go for it, HR34 is getting better and better with each software update. I have had mind since Feb, haven't regretted it at all. I don't use it as my main receiver in the living room. I leave it in one of the bedrooms and use it as my main recording workhorse. The guide and button response it still a bit sluggish compared to my 2 HR24's. As soon as the the guide becomes more responsive I will move it to the living room so that I can use the Genie feature.

I thought the abilities of the H or a C were essentially the same, except the H doesn't use one of the tuners from the HR34.

So having an H gives you everything a C does, plus it doesn't use a tuner to just watch live programming.

If you're only looking at recordings, this would be true.
If you want live buffering, only the C31 can give you this.

wouldn't I get the live buffering if I had a recording set up from the H24 on the HR34? and then was watching it?

Isn't it the same concept? except that the C31 doesn't have it's own tuner so it's using the tuner on the HR34 (doesn't have to record it though)

Yes you can record a show and watch it, but you need to plan ahead for this.

"Live buffering" doesn't need you to plan ahead, as it's always going on.

You're right. I get it. But if I already have an H24 no sense swapping for the C31, especially when the H24 is rarely used, and mostly used to watch recorded shows from the dying HR20.

I see [and agree with] your point.
I've had both and there are pluses and minuses with each.

Follow up question.

How many simultaneous streams can be watched from the HR34?

I know that if I'm watching a show on my H24 off of the HR20 in the basement, then I can't have access to any of the shows on the HR20 from the HR22 in the living room (I get the explanation point, or some other message)

Will I be able to watch recorded shows from the HR34 in different rooms(through different receivers) at the same time? If so, this idea might sell easier to my wife.

sweet! now I need to start moving my series recording requests to the HR22 so e can watch everything on the HR20 that is dying.

This is the hardest part about the DVR's no way to move recordings from one DVR to another. I don't need to burn to DVD or anything crazy, but even backing up to a hard drive that can only be read by another DVR would be nice...but...that will show up right after I get CSN-NW and Pac-12
