I did a reformat this weekend. Last night mine started acting up again. Went into MyVOD and selected a show to watch and it froze right there. Nothing I could do except reset. Seemed to work ok after the reset.

Like I said in the other thread this is especially frustrating because my R15 had been relatively trouble free. In fact I didn't really have hardly any problems with it until I started reading this board and hearing about everyone elses problems with theirs. Karma?

It seems like the freeze-ups, etc. became much more frequent beginning about a month ago. And, after resets, the problems come right back and become progressively worse until I finally have to do a complete reformat, which wipes out everything I have recorded.

I wish we had the opportunity to revert the R-15 back to a previous version of the software. Mine worked very well until about July... I think it 10C-something that started all my problems.

I don't hold any hope that the upcoming software will fix anything. I figure I'm stuck with this hunk of junk until the contract runs out.

Exactly!! But, I would not recommend getting the R10. I bought one last week and have been using it exclusively with not a single problem. I like it a lot, but because of all of the raving on this forum about the R10, I didn't realize that there are MANY more options than the R10. The R10 is a locked down Directv version which can not be easily upgraded, should you wish to do so. It can be upgraded with larger hard drives, but that's it. If you wanted to add home networking to share files between the DVR's and PC'S, you would need to go with the pre R10 models like the Directv RCA DVR40, DVR80, etc. There are many more Directv DVR's available than the R10 and they are very cheap and plentiful on Ebay.

Yeah, why would you want locked down software that works flawlessly when you can live on the edge?

well broke down and did the reformat reset last night much as i didnt want to seems to be working ok for now but for how long is the question
I've seen people mention various ways to do a hard rest:
  • Red reset button and then 02468
  • setup -> reset -> reset everything
  • Red reset button and then hold Rec and down arrow buttons
Do all three of these do the exact same thing? I tried the "02468" one this week and gave me the downloading update screen (I ended up with the same revision as before on my R15-300). But, it seemed to come up too quickly to have reformatted the disk. Maybe it just deleted all of my content and the Showcases (no big loss there ;) ).

So, does one of these actually do a complete reformatting of the disk? Would that be a more complete "resetting" of the unit?

Thanks!
Larry.

02468 just downloads the current approved software version for your box. The other two, as far as I know, do exactly the same thing: restore to factory conditions (delete all recordings, SLs, etc.) except keeping the current software version. Actually, think of it as restoring the hard drive to factory conditions (the software is in flash memory like a PC BIOS).

DA/R does not REALLY restore to factory conditions. Many options remain set.

Some here have speculated that the drive is wiped but settings in flash memory remain, but regardless it's not a TRUE "Back to the way it was when I got it."

Regardless again, it's seems to help.
