I have been chiding my neighbor about the need to upgrade from his 3 LNB/H10 setup. Now that D11 is operational, can he go to the new 3LNB oval dish, and if so, any idea when they will release that? Our DMA is Greenville, SC -- I don't know which satellite carries our HD locals.

It will depend where your SD locals come from. If they are on 119 D* will still give you a 5 LNB dish. Plus the Slimline3 is only used in a very select few markets.

The dish is the same size because its the same dish (at least for now anyway). Just a different LNB.

Oh, I didn't realize it was the same size -- I just figured it was smaller. So, it looks like there is no gain in giving up two LNBs.

So, what do any of you think my chances of getting an installer to install a Slimline-5 without LOS to 110 and 119 are now that all programming in Atlanta can be accessed off 99, 101, and 103.

I had Aerosat out about a month ago and he would not install it without the other 2 locations.

Is my best bet trying to get a number for Aerosat locally and ask for a supervisor/scheduler or wait until solid signal or somewhere gets the SL3?

Thanks for the help!!

I think the triggering factor for a SL3 vs SL5 (current slimline) is where your SD locals come from. If it's 99/101/103, then it should specify the SL3. However, supply is currently limited and SL3 LNBs are being issued only on a "as needed" basis. At least here anyway.

I'd give Aerosat a call and talk to them. First thing would be to see if they even have heard of the SL3 and if they have any. Then you can go from there as far as what the're requirements will be to get one and/or if they can't get you one, if they would now install the SL5 without the 110/119.

And with the SL5, would it be an issue with the guide data for 103 coming off 119?

wow, that was depressing....

Called Aerosat (the only number I could find was their corporate office in Tullahoma, TN) and was transferred to a supervisor, Brian, in their local Cartersville, GA office.

Brian had no knowledge of any channels being moved today (and asked who told me that....), the only 3 lnb dish he has heard of is the Phase 3, and he is adamant that the SL5 needs be peaked using 101 and 119. I asked him if anyone there had a meter that could pick up the ka signals and ka seemed to throw him off. I asked if he had a meter that could pick up 99 and 103 and he said that he can download updates to pick up any signal, but that they still have to peak to 119 and it is impossible to align a dish to pick up 99 and 103 without 119.

Are HSP's generally exclusive to an area or can they overlap. Would I be able to call directv and request a different hsp because Aerosat is clearly clueless.

They are exclusive. If you don't like them look into a dealer.

If you are in a hurry look for a local HT installer etc that might be able to do it for you.

Otherwise you might wait a little bit on the SL3. This is theoretically the first day they could possibly be doing an install of one of these. I'm not too surprised they have no idea what your talking about. Give them a couple weeks or more to actually start installing these and you might get a better result.

I also live in GA and had DirecTV installed a week or so ago by Aerosat. The initial install was botched horribly, mounting the dish (5lnb Slimline) on a pole with line of sight issues. I was getting 771's all over the place. He was clearly clueless. I called DirecTV and they scheduled a service call 3 days later. The next guy they sent from Aerosat was definitely not clueless. In the 3 day interval I had studied up on the location of DTV's satellites and which programs were on which transponders. I also picked up a Birdog because I anticipated alignment being an issue where I live in the mountains. The Aerosat guy (his first name is Caleb) had to relocate the dish to where LOS was no issue. He was extremely knowledgeable. He showed up with a Birdog, knew it didn't measure Ka signals, but followed the dithering method per the videos I had seen. He said if you are careful in dithering 101 and tweaking tilt for 119 you can usually get it pretty good on the Ka signals as well, but you have to verify it using the meters in the receivers, and then tweak if necessary. I was very satisfied with this service call. I have subsequently tweaked the alignment with my Birdog and then tweaking 103 using the receivers, but I've only been able to marginally improve it from his initial settings. He also turned down my tip, saying he wouldn't feel right accepting it since they should have done it right the first time. I tried pretty hard to get him to take the money, but he was adamant. I'm not sure why, but this impressed me almost more than the job he did. I subsequently was able to get the top dog's name and fired off a letter of recommendation on Caleb.

I only post this to point out that not all Aerosat's people are clueless. My first installer was, but the followup service guy was a gem. He turned a pretty unhappy customer into a happy one in short order.
