1. Can a Slimline dish be installed and adjusted to peak strength by using the on screen satellite signal screen.

2. If it is possible can anyone post the step by step instructions??? I think i saw them a few weeks ago on this site but cant remember where they are.

You could always use search. but I'd first get full signal on 101 then switch to 99c or 103c and peak further.

It's possible but highly unlikely to get the 99 & 103 without using a signal meter.
Not true. If you set up 101 and 119 correctly, and find the center of the 101 beam using the "dither' method, 103c and 99c are easy. You just use the fine tune on azimuth/elevation until you peak one of them (say 103c) and then the other will have great signals, just because of the geometry of the dish. The on-screen signal strength screen is a great tool for getting peak alignment on 103c and 99c. If your dish mount is plumb, the whole process is very straightforward.

My signals are 90s/100 on 101 (except for spotbeams) mid 90s on 110, 90s/100s on 119, and mid 90s on 103c and 99c. And I have never owned a signal meter.

I own a SuperBuddy, a Birddog , and an AccutracIII and still
fine tune the dish using the IRD sat strength meter on 103 (c)
and now 99 (c).

I'll admit with the meter there's not much to do but dispite the expense and all the bells and whistles of the meters , nothing can match the H-2*or HR-2* meters to super fine tune the Ka conus reception!!

Well, with the advice of some fine folks here, I got these numbers a few weeks ago...........no meter involved.:)

95 96 92 100 92 99 95 98
95 96 94 100 95 99 92 100
95 0 89 100 90 99 93 98
95 0 95 0 95 99 91 100

110
na na na na na na na 97
na 95 na 97 na na na na
na na na na na na na na
na na na na na na na na

119
na na na na na na na na
na na na na na na na na
na na na na na 95 72 92
92 95 95 95 95 95 60 96

103c
91 94 92 89 89 92 92 90
91 92 94 93 95 95 na na
95 na na na na 95 na na

I setup my bucket mounted slimline w/o a meter. Make sure the mount is plumb, set your settings on the dish to the correct el/az, mounted the dish and turned it till I got 101. Checked 119 and then 103. High 90's on everything. Took 10 mins.

All from looking at the screen on the tv.

Having a tv nearby helps, I'm saying unlikely if you can't see the tv, like being on a 2nd story roof and the tv is across the house in the basement. Walkie talkies would become a necessity. 99 would be especially tricky since you can hit the 103 @90% and get the [email protected]%.

I gotta agree with Johnnie5000 on this. Unless I have a very comfortable place to sit and a very, very patient person on the TV end, I wouldn't even think about doing this without the TV in my sight while I'm aligning the dish. :)

Thankfully I have a small TV that works very well with an HR21, and I've been good on my installs.

Cheers,
Tom

I use a small TV driven from a modulator attached to the receiver also. Makes life very easy.

Thats what alot of people say.
Have you ever tried it?

I've never had a problem doing alignments on 18"s and 3LNBs, when I got the 5LNB I was nervous because that was the talk here.

One day, I pulled the dish down (there are pictures floating around... the install was not good), put it where I wanted it, and lined it right up no problem.

FWIW, I used a D11 and a 13" TV, as well as dishpointer.com
Set it to 5LNB and put your house address in and boom, you should be almost dead on.

I have yet to plop a pre-set Slimline, with it's much superior mount, onto a plumb 2" mast (reassuring "thunk") and not find the 101 by simply swinging the dish through the correct azimuth. Using the receiver's built-in Signal Meters, after rough-peaking the 101, peaking the 103/99 is just a few minutes away.

The rocket science is on the other end. :)

+1. Have installed two so far without issue.

Everyone can see my SS post on here, that was by hand and yelling to my wife thru a window.

I'm having some issues getting good signals on 103, but my mast is slightly out of plumb. The mast is mounted on a wooden fence that has a bit of give in it when the dish is set on the mast. I'll shim it and see if things get better.

Wood posts are frowned on as a support for 5LNB masts for that reason and for being susceptible to changes in moisture. Any chance you can get a solid pipe mounted next to the fence instead?

Hey guys,

I'm considering a self install (maybe, I may be dropping Directv - that's another story). I'm told that the chimney mounts are a nono with the new slimline dishes - how are you guys mounting these badboys?

I live in downtown Philadelphia, so will need to get whatever install equipment up from my third floor deck onto my 4th floor roof - not easy but I have done it before.

The last I've heard and read is chimney mounts are still possible so long as the chimney is still sturdy. And extra strapping should be used for the monopoles as well.

Others have used under eave mounts and extended length wall mounts. As always, be certain to tie into serious lumber like joists or rafters. And if you can, tie the monopoles to joists as well.

Cheers,
Tom
