I had a problem with my HP Vista Premium laptop. I spent hours trying to figure out why it was stalling in all programs and even the start menu would hesitate. I thought I had a virus problem or spyware issue. Finally I turned off the network sharing with both of my HR20-700's. Computer is back to normal. Anyone else had this or am I doing something stupid here? Should I only share with one HR20 at a time or?????

Thanks,

Norm

PS if it's something really stupid use private mail LOL

No sir, you have stumbled across something that has been driving me nuts. I am running XP on my computer with Firefox. I have been complaining to Modzilla about the sluggishness of opening windows with the new software. I just unplugged the rj45's from both my HR20's and it is gone.
I am so upset that I never made the connection. Thank you.

Update: after replugging them back in the trouble seems to have cleared. dlugatch try turning the network back on and see if you are ok now. It appears it just needs to get reset somehow.

I also noticed this issue a couple months ago but never thought of posting it. The HR-20, when networked, brought our internet access to a crawl (even when nothing was being downloaded to the DVR). Unplugged the wireless bridge connected to the HR-20, other computers much happier. I've reconnected the HR-20 and haven't yet noticed the same problem.

Anyone able to explain why this would occur?

Could be a broadcast storm coming from the HR20. Sometimes faulty software and/or hardware can blast all FF broadcast packets onto a lan, or if you may have created a bridge / switch loop as there is no TTL in layer 2. When a broadcast packet is sent out all computers on that network must process the packet payload, this consumes CPU resources. Think of it as someone constantly tapping you on the shoulder while you are trying to get work done, that is what your computer can be going through under a bc storm. Broadcasts are normal and necessary it is how computers find each other for the first time on a network.

Only way to know for sure is to do some net diags when you having the problem.

But your problems quacks and waddles so it is likely a duck.

The HR20 etc will attempt to connect to your Windows machine and learn about any music, video's etc you have shared. This is a feature :) . I'm just guessing, but if you set up the Windows Media Center to share only a small amout (rather than not set up, or a bunch of stuff), you "might" see less traffic and have better performance.
