My hr 20 has been acting up for more than a year channels not changing and so on and I tried all the fixes.
I called up direct and they were very nice and I am wiling to pay the $100 dollars for a hr 24 and send the hr20 back and I do have the maintenance agreement.I know they do not know what unit you are going to get but the rep said if they cannot get you a hr24 then turn it down if you want.
The tech called and said they had no hr24s and he agreed with me if It was a free replacement I would not have a gripe since I am paying for a leased replacement and getting a new two year commitment I should not settle for a refurbished older unit.

Direct should change this policy on giving you older units when you are giving them money for a replacement and being stuck with a new commitment and will still be stuck with a slow older much used model for two more years.

Anybody have any ideas on what to do and I like direct but dish and the hopper could be a option?

I am in a similar situation. My hr23 hard drive is failing. Although as a long-time customer I am eligible for a free replacement, there is no guarantee what hardware will be sent. Since I absolutely wanted an hr24, I paid $200 from an independent source, rather than deal with DTV's replacement policy. I have no desire to switch to Dish.
I just went through this with two HR20-700s. Direct will NOT ship you 24s. They've got the system rigged to only send old used crap.

The only apparent answer is to schedule an in-home appointment under the service plan, then talk the technician out of HR24s to replace your HR20s. The tech who did this for me said it was fortunate that I was the first call of the day. That way he was almost sure to have HR24s on the truck.

But remember if you're using HR20s you WILL lose off air channels with a HR24. The only answer is to buy the AM21n. I was able to get Direct to credit me $50 to pay for one of those, and got program credits to help offset the second I needed.

If you can swing this with the installer, a tip would be appreciated. I gave my guy $10.
Thanks, I always tip the installer but this is a bad policy by direct because I am going to put out money and get a new Two year agreement but I will not do it for old equipment for a replacement.
