For my part, OTA in Southern California works as well as satellite-based reception. I've had the same dropouts in audio and video at similar times and on the same channels. No problems recording or switching.

I did discover that apparently the ABC automated weather channel runs on Windows, because for a few hours on Sunday it had a big fat "out of memory" dialog over it. Classy.

I haven't detected any problems with OTA here in Los Angeles. I'm pleased that the HR20 picks up over twice the number of digital stations than my older HD receiver. Plus it helped that I "un-diplexed" my OTA antenna lead and brought down a dedicated lead to the HR20. Haven't had the opportunity to try to record any OTA programs yet, but others in the L.A. area have reported success.

Well the optimastic side of me says we'll all get ota this week. The realistic side (and the side that is very familiar with DTV's business practices) says there is no way in h*ll this is coming any time soon.

I don't get why OTA is such a big deal for D* that they are more cautious about it than other releases.
Even though it doesn't "seem" like a big deal.
A lot of "code" change where done underneath the hood.

What might seem "small" on top, has significant impact underneath.

Given that, do you have a feel yet for how much longer they're going to let the original group play with it before they begin rolling out to others?

I haven't seen an update from you so I am assuming you haven't received one from D* - or that the update you have received isn't ready for public consumption.

Just in a broad, general sense, do you have a gut feeling on this? Soon? Very Soon? Not until a certain very hot place is bombarded by snow and icicles?

In a general sense... soon.
But you are right, I have not received an update on the "update"

I thought it was just a "toggle"?

i love that word....toggle....

At least it appears to be a less "eventful" release than others have been...
It was just a toggle, but that toggle allowed people access to code segments they didn't have access to before.

I am worried if we do't get it this week, there will be perfect excuse not to roll it out until 2007. Christmas is around the corner and there won't be enought staff around to handle potential issues and all.
I wouldn't worry too much about support. They have support centers in India for a reason and they don't have a holiday for Christmas in India. :D

Yes, but I am afraid the thinking logic is there won't be engineers around to do a new release in case urgent fixes are necessary. To avoid being call back during the holidays, they may as well just bag everything for a while.

I don't think I have personally talked to anyone in DTV that is based in India. It seems my call to general line is normally picked by Neveda call center. Maybe I van get a job there when I retire. Vegas pretty much will be only think that can get me away from TV.

I have to be honest here, I think they should roll it out right now. I did not even consider D* as a viable alternative until local channels were available, and for all of you who have been living without HD locals, or any locals for that matter, OTA is a must. I applaud your patience and I hope that you will soon be enjoying 0x104.

Exactly Lamont. The catch22 is that enjoying the amazing picture quality has caused me to almost all but ignore the SD programming, and without local OTA, my choices are pretty limited. Plus traditional network TV has gotten a lot better over the last couple of years since the HBOs of the world began beating their butts with better original programming. I'm itchin' to give OTA a try and there doesn't seem to be that much feedback for 104 here.

Makes me understand Earls comment about "by next week most of you will be complaining about something else" however it is realized in reverse effect from what I originnally thought. My original thinking was that we would all be forced to move on to another issue to complain about because we would all have the OTA feature not an extension of our agony while a select few groups get to enjoy OTA. Anyhow good to see it's performing (from what I'm reading) well enough to move forward and I will be expecting a very nice Xmas present from DTV for making the rest of us wait so long:)

I don't want to put words in Earl's mouth but it doesn't seem like he expected the rollout to be this narrow in the first pass, and as slow in coming nationally.

Big picture though - it's only been a week. When Tivo 6.2 came out for the DirecTivos, I was one of the last to get it and that was two months after it was announced.

Probably the same CSR who said that the OTA rollout is being delayed until March. Sounds like someone's going to start another "Time to spill the beans" thread pretty soon...

FWIW, a CSR (1st tier tech support), with whom I spoke with, confirmed that the release is being tested in a small area and would be released Nationally after the New Year.

This can't be right. Can it?
An "HD Specialist" (3rd tier support) with D* told me about the test group (which I already knew about from here) on Saturday, but told me it would be pushed to everyone "by the middle of December".

He also said I'd have HD LiL (Tulsa) before the end of the year. I had better not miss the bowl season in HD.

That is it. I don't have ABC MPEG4 feed. The first test of patience comes this weekend. Tiger only plays 20 games a year. This weekend is his Target World Invitational. If I don't have HD feed, the SD broadcast on SD channels will be so aweful that I won't see the small ball when it's air borne. There won't be any undulation detectable on the green, either. I need OTA by Saturday morning.

Sorry. I am probably the only golf fan here.

I really think it is this week or next week scenario. I certainly hope the tier 3 specialist you spoke to is informed.

I don't believe the Target World is going to be broadcast in HD anyway.
