I have only had my HR20-700 for about a month and so far it hasn't been to bad except for a few small things. One of the first things it did on my first night of using it was lockup after I was scrolling down on the guide. Never had my 2nd gen Tivo hard lock but oh well. Then I have more recently had the problem where when I am fast forwarding it will randomly change resolutions and squish the image then go back to normal.

Tonight after the many updates it has had I turned on my tv and saw a show that I was interested in and proceeded to rewind back to the beginning which was only about 15 minutes. After rewinding back about 3 minutes it does the flashing and changes the resolution squishing the image and going out of wide screen mode then back into it. Then it does it about 4 more times before hard locking. Only pulling the plug would fix this so I lost the show I wanted to see.

Then the other thing that I don't like was left to stare me in the face. Why in the world does it take 10 times longer to boot up than my Windows machine??? Running a stripped down Linux OS shouldn't it be lightning fast? I know it has a decent speed HD and I assume that even if they bought a crappy CPU for $20 or $30 it would still be many times faster than what is needed for this unit.

Boot time includes downloading a portion of the Guide, and that takes some time. For all the reported problems (of some), boot time is by far the least significant for them to work on (if it needs working on).

Do you have Native mode turned on in the HR20? If so, turn it off, and set the output resolution (fixed) at either 720P or 1080i, whichever more closely represents the native display capabilities of your TV.

If you are using HDMI, try completely disconnecting the HDMI cable from your HR20 and the TV. and use Component. Do a red button reset after switching to Component only. There are HDMI issues with some TV's that can cause all sorts of wierd issues.

You might have Native Mode on. Turn it off.
You might be using HDMI. Use component.

Use the Skip Back feature to skip 15 minute at a time.

The HR-20 boots up faster than any of my Windows machines. It then has to wait for the guide loop to come back around. It does not repopulate then entire guide, just the next few hours.

I will try turning off native mode. My tv is 720P and I thought native would give the best quality.

I am using the component connections.

On another note the last week or so I have been having alot of audio cutting out. Restarting the HR20 seems to fix it for a day or two.

All native mode does is change the format that the HR20 outputs to the "native" resolution of that channel. You won't experience any loss of quality turning it off unless you use the format button on the remote to switch the output format to one that is less than the "native" resolution of that channel (ie. watching a 720p program in 480i).

That is not necessarly accurate, it depends on the scaler and deinterlacer in your display systems, I have seen deinterlacing artifacts that I did not like in the 480i content when turned native off in the hr20 and set it to 720p. My display deinterlacers and scalers appear to be better that what the hr20 has, but that is going to depend on your systems if the HR20 has better scalers than your display you may want turn off native mode. Additionally one of my displays has a dynamic scaler that automatically adjusts 480i wide screen content to fit the 16:9 format, if the hr20 is set to a fixed resolution I would have to use the format buttons to zoom or crop.
