No E* receivers have serial ports that you can pass commands through. However, all but an older model or two can accept IR commands as well - including your 501.

Wow have you seen the latest from Sonicblue this seems like the player to get .Only thing I can think of is I have 501 and this one uses IR to control your sat box Does the 501 have a serial port on back to jack into? Im away for a few days and dont remember if its got one .
