I've recently got a new 7.1 receiver and and hooked it up to my Dish box (ViP 622) using an TOS Opt Link cable. For HDMI it works ok as I am guaranteed to get a dolby digital output signal. I only get five speakers but it's clear and it's well synched. Not sure why I don't get all 7, it should process the sound i thought but whatever I can live with that.

My problem is more with SD. For SD it is varied. On HBO it's works fine typically, but on some of the other channels, I am going to pick 149, Fox Soccer Channel as an example the sound is terrible. If I go up close to any of my speakers it just sounds like they have been dropped in a fish bowl. It's just this low gurlgling sound when I would expect the sound.

I am pretty sure there isn't much wrong with the AV. It's an Onkyo, which is at least a good brand, if not high end. With my DVD I get very good sound through all speakers, just i get strange results through Dish..

When I watch OTA through my TV which has TOS Link Out i also get excellent sound through all 7 speakers. So it does it seems to be related to the Dish box...

Anyone have experience on this?
