I show 32% space remaining.

I added up everything.. I have 23 hours of SD programs and 9 hours of HD programs on my DVR.

Does this 32% remaining sound right?? Seems to quickly get to < 10% everyday! Anyone else have issues of seemingly too little space.

Doesn't this unit have 200 hours of SD space? Those 9 hours of HD can't be taking up that much space? I wonder if I should do a total reset? I've never done one of those in the 4 months I have had this unit.

Just doesn't SEEM to add up.....?

As I understand it, 1 hour is not a fixed amount of space. I assume there number of hours are based on some estimating model that assumes some level of movement in MPEG(2/4) frames. The high level idea is based on a reference frame and then sending only changes to the reference frame, until the next reference comes by. If you are recording something with little to no motion you should be able to record a lot more than if you were recording something that constantly changes in the same amount of disk space. This might be what you are seeing.

They are just usual shows.. ER, battlestar.. some fishing shows etc. In otherwards.. average.... and isn't 200 hours assuming average?

Anyone else near 30-40% want to add up your programing to compare?

Okay - just a point of comparison.

I'm showing 42% free, and here is what I've currently got in my Playlist:

13 hrs MPEG2 SD
1 hr MPEG4 SD
7 hrs MPEG2 HD
10 hrs MPEG4 HD

In three minutes I'll have another hour of MPEG2 SD on the drive from this college FB game I'm watching/recording, and I'm still showing 42% free.

Okay, my game ended and I deleted it, so I got rid of 3 hours of MPEG2 SD and I'm back to 42% free.

I my case the number seems pretty accurate. I have about 19 hours of mpeg2 HD and 17 hours of SD and it shows 32% remaining.

Those 24 hours of SD, is any of it from a digital channel (e.g. a local digital channel)? The SD programing from digital channels take the same amount of space as HD.

How can you have 1hr of SD MPEG4, mpeg4 is only HD I thought.

One can really simply list hours as SD, MP2, or MP4 without need of stating if it's in HD or not.

This quote... "10.25 hours of MPEG-2 SD, 16.25 hours of MPEG-2 HD, 26.5 hours of MPEG-4 HD"....

... REALLY makes me think my unit is having some space issues.. I have only NINE hours of HD total and just 13 more hours of SD and have less space left than you!

Not necessarily. Local digital stations are MPEG4 but the content may or may not be HD. That hour is Survivor, which is not HD, though it was recorded from the MPEG4 local CBS affiliate rather than the MPEG2 local.

Oh yeah.. your right.

Hey.. I just read that the capacity of this unit is ONLY 30 HOURS of MP2HD... yikes.. that probably explains things.. my 9 hours of HD are all MP2.. after I delete ER.

The math actually doesn't really work out. If it holds 30 hours of MPEG-2 HD (on average) and you have 9 hours of MPEG-2 HD, that should take up 30% of your storage, leaving 70% free. 23 hours of SD shouldn't be taking up another 38%, leaving you with the 32% free you're reporting.

Yeah.. it is odd.. I have decided to watch all my most important stuff over the Thanksgiving holiday and then on Sunday night.. do a FULL FORMAT reset... and start over.

This is a hard thing to do for me.. I am a power user with 200+ on the TTD list and 45 series links and autorecord searches etc etc... but I'll just do it.

thanks... seems this is not a widespread thing.. but more just my unit.

Here's what I've got:

17.5 hrs. SD (call it 20): 10% of hard drive used (assuming 200 hrs SD)
10 hrs. HD MPEG 2 : 33% of hard drive used (assuming 30 hrs HD MPEG 2)
2.5 hrs. HD MPEG 4: 5% of hard drive used (assuming 50 hrs. HD MPEG 4)
Total hard drive used: 48%

My Playlist bar shows 26% of my hard drive available (so 74% used). That's a discrepency of 26%.

One method for finding out "what" is taking up "what amount of space".

Use the Mark and Delete method from the MyPlaylist (hit Menu).

As you "Mark" a show, the bar will reflect what amount of space is going to be "gained" if you proceed with the delete function.

You may possible find a program that for what ever reason, recorded long... didn't have a high level of compression, or what ever...

But adding up the "raw" hours, doesn't give you the whole story... as DirecTV's compression is a variable compression rate... so ONE 1 hour show, doesn't take up the same amount of space as the next 1 hour show.
