Spaceway, the developing Ka-Band/satellite broadband platform, could be a year away from the launch pad.

Pradman Kaul, chairman and CEO at Hughes Network Systems (HNS), which is spearheading Spaceway's development, said Monday that the launch of satellites for the future service could begin in July 2003. Spaceway is expected to be ready for use in early 2004, he said.

The Spaceway news came along with a second quarter update for DirecWAY, HNS' satellite broadband service. HNS added about 12,000 net DirecWAY residential and small office/home office customers during the three-month period. As of June 30, the offering had more than 123,000 residential and SOHO subscribers in North America, the company said.

A second quarter bright spot for HNS was its set-top box business. The company said it shipped 512,000 DirecTV receivers in the second quarter, compared to 413,000 units reported during the same three-month period last year.
