Hi all,
I am new to this forum, so please excuse if this question has been answered already.
I am currently a Cablevision customer, soon switching to D* and just had a quick question or 2.
I am planning on signing up with the Sunday ticket and since its includes the Sports pack I was wondering then since I will get NESN, will I be able to get Redsox games and Bruins Games?
Last question is if I signup for Sunday ticket after 4 months can I changed packages without being penalized for it?

Thanks for all your help

No, unless you live in the Boston area.
The pro sporting events on NESN and all of the other channels will be blacked out.
You would need the baseball package for the Redsox games or the NHL package for the Bruins games.

Yes you can after 4 months:)

BTW :welcome_s
This may be a stupid question but why even offer NESN if I wont be able to watch those games. I understand the fact that i am not in that RSN's area but since im paying extra for the channel shouldnt i get the games?
And last question I promise.
I have seen here around this forum that people have "requested" certain receivers and dishes. My question is: Should i even bother to ask for anything or no. I really want the new HR22 since it has more recording time, and Im not sure if I should be asking for a specific dish.

The main value is that you can see the pregame/postgame on most of the regional sports channels. (Those aren't included in the professional sports packages.) Also, some of the college sports aren't blocked out. You are right though; not being able to see professional sports significantly diminishes the value of the stations in the package.

To get the pro games, you would need to get MLB Extra Innings, NHL Center Ice, NBA League Pass, or MLS Direct Kick. Sucks I know, but unfortunately thats the way it is:rolleyes: Directv wants you to buy the sports packages;)
What about for Preseason NFL games? I already have Sunday Ticket, but I wanna know if I can watch my Skins this Saturday.
I tuned to the regional sports channel that was showing the Jets v. Redskins last week to watch Favre, but it was blacked out.

It will probably be blacked out. Last Sunday, a Bengals game was shown one of my local stations (which I received with no problems). Later that night, the replay was shown on FSN Cincinnati. I was blacked out of the replay even though I live in the Cincy DMA. Preseason NFL blackouts are tough to understand sometimes...

The value of the Sports Pack varies greatly depending on where you live and what you want to get out of it. For example, without the Sports Pack, the only RSN I would receive would be Comcast Sports Chicago (Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, and Blackhawks). However, because Iowa is claimed as a home market by the Cardinals, Blues, Brewers, Royals, Twins, Wild, and Timberwolves, with the Sports Pack I receive FSN Midwest and FSN North without any blackout restrictions.

As a misplaced Minnesota fan, getting the Twins and Wild (as well as Golden Gopher hockey) without having to buy Extra Innings or Center Ice subscriptions means for my needs at least, the Sports Pack is a tremendous value.
The main benefit of the SPorts pack is the 'non-professional' games shown. Well I should say, MAJOR non-pro. You will get Arena Football, Indoor football, minor-league baseball, and a few others (how bout Womens Pro football? :) those games were showing on FSN Pittsburgh recently). The 4 majors, NBA, NHL, MLB & MLS will be blacked out since they are available for purchase w/ the individual sports subs. and then theres the signifcanltly viewed allowance that leftwing was discribing which affects only a small percentage of ppl, or areas rather. With D*, the entire game will be blacked out (meanwhile over on E*, only the blackout window is blacked out, once a game goes into extra innings, past the window, you can view it, or if a game is rain delayed, D*'s blackout will follow the rain delay whereas E* will not. You might even get lucky and see an entire game outside the blackout window on E* after a rain delay).

I RARELY, if EVER see any college football games blacked out on the RSN's. Which to me is an extraodinary benefit. BUT *I* have E*, not D*. I think D* is a lil more strict w/ blackouts, basically IF a college game is available for purchase (ie: ESPN Gameplan) then D* will black it out. BUT over on E*, the game MIGHT get blacked out on 1 channel but not on another. *SHRUG* And sometimes not even at all. I've noticed that the "Big east game of the week" gets blacked out on MSG but if its showing on another network, like Comcast sportsnet west just as an example, then you can watch it there.

NFL Preseason games........I have not found ANYONE who can explain why these are NOW blacked out. Several years ago, they were never blacked out. Now they are ALWAYS blacked out. The only blackout rule for NFL applies only to within a 100mile radius of the stadium and ONLY if the game doesnt sell out. ANd that is just for LIVE games. There should be no reason to blackout a tape-delayed game. The only thing I can figure, is that the RSN doesn't have "National rights" to the game. But I've never heard of a national rights rule for NFL. Usually national rights only comes into play if other networks are showing the game, which isn't the case for NFL. Just the 2 local broadcasters. ARGH! who can say. It could have something to do w/ NFL Network (where you CAN watch all the preseason games), but the blackouts started happening before NFL network came into existence.

During preseason unlike regular season the NFL teams control the rights to preseason games so you would only see them on local channels. Sometimes they will put preseason games on RSN's but only for the regional audience. As NFL games aren't usually on RSN's, its local channels or national channels only.

What part of CT are you in? If you are in Fairfield County you probably won't be able to get NESN, but you should get it in any other part of the state. If you go to Directv's website you can search by zip code to see what RSNs are included in your area.

I called and requested a HR20 and the installer waited an extra hour and a half that morning just to get me what I wanted. I would say this. It can not hurt to have them note it. I would probably tell you that the HR22's are very new and doubt that alot of installers have them in stock yet. Good luck. When I asked everyone about a HR20 everyone on here said it was about a 1 in a million chance but I guess I was the 1 in a million. I wanted the HR20 because it had the OTA tuners built in it and I did not want to have to call them back to see if I could talk them into giving me one for free.

Yep. That's why I only subscribe to it from mid-Sept to mid-March: for college football and hoops. Great value, particularly since my FSN 'affiliate' (CSN-MA) essentially ignores fthe Pac-10 national coverage on FSN. Plus a lot of times one of those FSNs out west will have a Pac-10 game aired regionally. ESPNU and CSTV are no-brainers - lots of college coverage there. Plus a lot of the other RSNs are good for other conferences (Altitude-Big XII, SNY-A10 and Big East, FSN-MW-MVC, etc).

The only college basketball games that get consistently blacked out on the RSNs are SEC games on FSN-FL, Sun Sports or FSN-South and Big XII games on FSN-MW and FSN-RM.
Thanks for all the input guys. One thing I did notice over on E* is that they offer game only RSN feeds. This might be a better choice for me. But i really like all of the other features from D*.

BTW, I do live in fairfield county in CT, so like the website says, i guess no Redsox/Bruins games for me without MLBEI/NHLCI

As an FYI, E* does not have the MLB package so I think you would still be out of luck trying to see the Red Sox.

Just a slight correction to your post:

"[The various professional sports leagues] want you to buy the sports packages."

NFL, MLB, NBA, etc., make a lot of money by doing things this way.

The game only RSNs are HD and like they say, it is the game only. Blackout restrictions apply the same as the SD fulltime RSNs. BTW: The HD RSNs that are not fulltime at D* are "game only" RSNs. :)

With D*, you might get some additional Minor-League and Regional sports from your area because of YES Network being carried. Sportspak is a bit more expensive with D*, though.
