I have family in Phoenix, AZ. They may be moving back and dont want to change to kansas city.
BUt i know some locals are spotbeams as KC are so i was not sure if they would receive phoenix locals if they did not change their address.

If they could get locals can they put up an antenna and get kc locals as well? or will the guide not scan the locals for an area they are not supposed to be in?

1st it's against federal law
2nd it's against terms and conditions
3rd it's against this boards rules to talk about things that violate conditions
4th the only locals not on spot beams are the DNS cities
5th it won't work

Satellite locals are determined by the zip code on your Directv account. Guide data for off-air antenna channels are determined by the zip code entered into the receiver by the user.

Shades, really... What is against federal law? Moving from Phoenix to KC, or picking up KC locals with an off air antenna while they are there?

I know most of that. But others on here have discussed other cities and moving and keeping locals in another city.
I know its against federal law but again people do it all the time too. I just was asking. What is a DNS city

OK legally to keep in line with rules here. I know people who are in an area where they can pick up 2 locals. My grandparents actually on DTV get joplin locals but when they had an antenna up they could get Tulsa, OK locals. They like both since they have family in Tulsa and like to watch weather and local news there. But we could never get it to work on the receiver it would never pick up anything. I must have done something wrong

IF you are within the reception range of out of town stations (usually 90 miles or less with a good antenna), you can enter your local zip code for city one, and a secondary zip code for the out of town locals into the antenna setup. That allows the guide data for both cities to appear for the off air tuner.

Entering Phoenix as one city and KC as the second city will list guide data for both, but you will only pick up the one you are in at the time via off air. None of this will affect the satellite delivered locals the receiver is programmed to receive by D*, which will be the city of record on your account, and can only be changed by DirecTv.

Ok next time i am visiting them ill give that a try. They would love that. They are a little over 90s miles but they get a few Tulsa stations. I got them a HUGE 8 bay antenna on a 10ft poll on top of their house. Maybe thats why it works.

They want tulsa locals only not joplin but they were told they cant

Stations have the rights to DMA's which are protected by the FCC. If DIRECTV were to just start broadcasting any local stations to any city they would be violating FCC law. If a consumer knowingly provides false information for the intent of getting local channels from a different market they are also violating the FCC laws.

If this didn't happen we wouldn't have local channel issues that we have now. The companies could pick who would be able to watch whatever. Everyone could have DNS.

The OP is stating that his parents don't want to change the service address on the DIRECTV account so that they are authorized for local stations from another market. This is what makes it illegal because he wants AZ locals from the satellite and KC locals with OTA.

Well, legally, Directv cannot give it to them via satellite due to DMA rules, but the government cannot control what they can pick up with an antenna.

What I would do, is erase the off-air tuner, and add it back as Tulsa zip code. They will still get the Joplin stations from satellite, and then the tulsa ones with the off air antenna. No need to even enter the Joplin zip code for the off air antenna, unless there are stations there they want that are not provided by DirecTv.

Edit: DNS is distant network service. Its offered to people who are unable to get locals via directv or OTA with an antenna. No one withing 60 miles of a major city would quality.

Didnt use to be like that back in the day. The only reason they dont want to change is so that they can watch the chiefs games when they would be blacked out here. That and in hopes when the local station breaks in for some news thing or weather or whatever and interupts their shows they can be on the other locals as to not miss the episode.

Well, that would not work even if it was legal. It would be rather pointless to have boxes authorized for Phoenix sitting in KC in the first place unless you like staring at 771 error messages :)

See i didnt know all were spotbeams anymore. Use to last time i worked for DTV only some were spotbeams and i knew people who did that very thing claiming to be in one city to get something out of it but yet be in another.

BUt at least out of this i found out how to program for off air locals from a diff city thats good.

Yep, that is exactly why I have a 10' FTA satellite dish in my back yard. I can pick up the network feeds directly (in case of pre-emptions locally) and catch some sports I couldnt get on my local stations. A good example is Saturdays upcoming Little League international championship game on ABC. My network local is showing Paid Programming instead of the game. I will be watching the game from WPRU in Puerto Rico :)

I understand all LiL channels are to be offered by DirecTV by the end of this year or sometime in 2013, would that make DNS obsolete at that point?

Thats not exactly what the new requirements are referring to...its more like if you carry any stations from a DMA, you have to carry all of them. ANd they will still be spot beams, so you would technically still only be able to pick up the stations from the satellite if the spot beam for those locals reached your area. They are still not going to offer locals from any area. I think some of you may be referring to significantly viewed stations, which at best means neighboring markets. Ones that you could pull in with an antenna will be about it.

DNS is still a viable sales tool for people in OTR trucks, RV accounts, etc. I doubt they will do away with them, but you never know.
