StarBand Works With Retailers, Clarifies Tech Issues

StarBand is busy readying its "dealer direct" program, in which the provider of satellite Internet services will work directly with retailers in getting its product to store shelves.

StarBand President David Trachtenberg said working with retailers so far "has been an enlightening experience." In a matter of days, about 1,200 retailers have contacted StarBand about forming a direct relationship with the satellite Internet company, he said.

What's also encouraging is that StarBand's small office business is starting to gain interest. "There is a lot of pent-up demand among small offices (for this type of service)," Trachtenberg said.

Within the next few days, StarBand will launch an online registration area for retailers who want to work directly with the company.

The effort comes after EchoStar contacted its retailers saying it will work independently of StarBand, and that they can contact StarBand directly for product and help. The EchoStar moves were detailed in a letter sent to retailers last week.

An amendment to that EchoStar letter sent late Friday said retailers can and should continue using the single antenna solution for getting DISH Network and StarBand service. That is a correction from the initial letter, which said the StarBand service must be on a different antenna than the antenna used for EchoStar's DISH Network satellite TV service.

EchoStar still has a relationship with StarBand, and EchoStar remains one of the largest shareholders of the satellite Internet company. EchoStar CEO Charlie Ergen also is a co-chair of StarBand's board. With new dealer direct efforts, "we want to take control of our market destiny," Trachtenberg said.
