stereo volume

Kind of a strange thing happened...when I have my stereo on for surround sound, the volume is now being controlled by my dtv remote. The volume dial on my stereo does not move, but the actual volume is being changed by the remote. In the past, when I used my surround sound, I would always mute the tv volume and crank up the stereo. Now I cannot do that because the stereo volume seems to be controlled by the dtv remote as well. On top of that, to get good sound out of my stereo, I need to have the stereo volume way up, more than normal. I am wondering if one of my kids did something to change some settings on the remote or something. One thing that has happened about the same time is that the actual volume button on my tv was pushed inside the unit and is now useless...I don't know if that is related but I noticed it at the time I started having this issue with the stereo volume.

I am waiting for an answer to this too since I have a similar setup. The kids have one too many times changed the setup to watch a DVD and boy did the cats jump high.

I have learned to adjust it since that happened, but it sure is annoying.
Yeah, our cats have done the same! The strange thing is that when I put the stereo on a different function, say tuner, the volume is so loud at its current level compared to when I use it watching tv...and it did not used to be like that.
I would take it the audio going into your receiver is coming out of your TV. Check your TV's menu. You should have an option that says something like "Monitor audio on/off" or "Audio out fixed/variable". You want it both on and fixed. My guess the problem is there.
How do you have the audio from the IRD connected to your A/V receiver? Does it go through the TV and then to the A/V receiver? If so, then it’s likely the remote is adjusting the TV volume The current H, R, and HR IRD”s don’t have any internal volume control. Also, if you press the volume keys on the remote and you *don’t* get an on-screen message stating that you need to program your remote, it means that you have programmed it to control the TV, A/V receiver or some other device that has volume control.

Thanks a ton CS...the audio out was set on variable so I changed it to fixed, and that did the trick. I have a little guy that is going to be 2 this week and he sometimes gets a hold of the remotes and causes problems for dad.

Thanks again...
You're welcome.

Just wait a year or two until your little one decides that the DVD player is hungry and feeds it a banana. It used to happen with VCRs all the time at my stereo store. I had a tech who was a good outdoorsman write up a service tag once saying it was $70 to remove foreign matter and clean the mechanism for the customer's VCR, and by the way, your tree has Dutch Elm disease.
Ouch...

Well I have had our dvd player apart recently...two disc's loaded at the same time, obviously causing it to jam. So fixing this most recent issue was a breeze, thanks to your help, compared to that one.
