I am getting a message when turn on tv that a problem had been detected in the storage device and system will now scan the disk to fix it. Tried rebooting dvr but comes up again. Was fine yesterday. Does this mean my hard drive is dead. It’s an hR 54

Yes, your hard drive died/is dying a slow death. The HR34 is the first Genie receiver so you’ll be able to get a replacement for it (likely either HR54 or HS17 depending on your other equipment).
If you have standalone HD or HDDVR receivers on your account (like HR24 or H25) then I strongly suggest the HR54 receiver as a replacement since the HS17 forbids these boxes on an account.
If you don’t have the Protection Plan, the cost for a replacement Genie box is $19.95

It is possible that an HR34 will be replaced with an HR44 depending on inventory at the time.

Usually the signs of a failing hard drive include degrading performance, slow response times, constant rebooting, weird hard drive noises, issues rewinding Live TV, etc.

It is quite odd for a hard drive to die without warning ( at least according to my experience). As a note, though, the HR34 is an 11 year old box so if you’ve had it for that long it’s only time until the hard drive will die..

Sending me an HR 54 and was told csn just swap out boxes and reconnect cables. Also will this connect to the hr 24 have in bedroom through the whole home thing so can see both recording lists. Was also told don’t need to return box as too old even though may get an email saying otherwise. Was told ignore it. If I take out HDD on old box can this shows be recovered to another drive by a computer repair shop

Yes, the HR54 can be used with whole home DVR and the HR24 just fine. Just get rid of any Cinema Connection Kits with the HR34 as the HR54 gets connected to the internet wirelessly or through Ethernet.
DIRECTV doesn’t want an HR34 back, although they may ask you to drop it off at FedEx/UPS to simply recycle it (not required to be done).
A computer shop cannot do anything with the HR34 drive. Those recordings are useless without the HR34 receiver itself being activated. The recordings are attached to the receiver ID that recorded them. They cannot play in any other receiver.

Does the HR 54 have same connections as HR 34. I just need HDMI of course. , Ethernet for hard wire and component jack for a sensheiser rf headphone I have connected
Recordings are tied to the DVR, so even if you could transfer them somehow to the new DVR, they wouldn't play.

Are you talking about L/R RCA jacks for stereo audio? The HR54 needs a special optional cable if you want the red/white RCAs, but it does have optical and coaxial digital audio jacks.

The special cable is one of these (one has component video and the other has composite video):
Amazon.com: 10 Pin Audio and Video DIN Cable - NOT S-Video Cable - RGB Component and Composite - Compatible with DIRECTV AT&T: H25, C31, C41, C41-W, C51, C61, C61-K : Electronics

10 Pin Audio and Video DIN Cable - NOT S-Video Cable - 6 feet - RCA Composite - Compatible with DIRECTV AT&T: H25, C31, C41, C41-W, C51, C61, C61-K (amazon.com)

You can technically recover the recordings off the drive and copy them to a new drive via a Linux tool called GParted. However, to play them the HR34 needs active DVR service.
If he wanted to keep the HR34 he could do this and then put this new drive back in the HR34 and he could then watch his recordings. Of course this wouldn’t work if the hard drive is beyond recovery which it sounds like may be the case.

I tried to do a sector copy of the bad drive to a new one, but that failed.
You don't get it - the process of recovering your recordings from failed drive must be done by [GpartEd program] as a pair of tasks: XFS dump+restore the drive's FILE SYSTEM (eg metadata/folders/files).
Not by BLIND COPY SECTORS !
Then you'll get a copy; perhaps partial, but a lot of recordings you could play again.

My hr54 should be here Thursday. I’ve already taken the hr 34 out of my entertainment console. Once this arrives can I just plug in my hdmi and Ethernet cable as well as power and be up and running.

I have my headphones connected to the HR 34 component audio out as these don't have an optical input. I don't think these cables will work then.
