It was announced today that the Atlantis Hubble mission, STS-125 to be launched October 10, has been outfitted with HD in-flight capability. That is a first for the shuttle program. Nasa also is archiving the mission with an IMAX camera in the shuttle bay.

So my question for Directv is: any chance that one of those many HD-PPV channels could be used for the NASA HD feed during the 12 days of the Hubble mission in October? Directv certainly has available bandwidth.

I'm not doubting the report... but how did they get the HD footage for Planet Earth?

IIRC, that was from the ISS.

How did they get the HD equipment to the ISS? If it came up on the shuttle, I wonder why they didn't unpack it for the mission?

HDNET may have access to this feed since they do all the STS launches in HD. Looks like it is time for the NASA Channel to go HD.

I've caught the last few launches on HDNet and it looks great! Short-term; I agree it would be great for HDNet to carry this. After all, we don't neccessarily care when it's shown in HD (mission coverage), just that it's provided to us in HD. Besides, my hunch is anyone here who's interested in watching this has at least one DVR!

Nasa TV on AMC6 KU has been showing launches in HD using Mpeg2 4:2:0 video, so its there...Hopefully they will remain HD for the entire mission. If they do, and Directv doesn't pick it up, HDNet should show quite a bit of the highlights...as I believe they paid for the HD cameras on the shuttle (or maybe just the one on the external tank)...so they may have a contract with NASA for the HD coverage.... We can hope.
