Well My install was scheduled earlier today and as I had feared no line of sight. two techs showed up one came in and looked at the locations of the tv's the other stayed outside trying to find a signal. 10 minutes later the bad news no LOS... "Trees trees and more trees"

I waited over 2hrs for them to show and they were gone in probably 30 minutes.

They were both nice guys though and prior to showing did inform me they were finishing an install prior to mine and would be on their way shortly. They did arrive in the time frame that was given. I'm just very disappointed to wait the time I did and everything get scratched so fast.

I was offered for someone else to take a look and I did accept the offer but I do not hold out much hope.

 :(

Get a compass, walk around your yard, and see if there is anywhere on the property that you can view the satellite at 101 with a little space on either side. Compass direction would be 211 degrees (basically close to southwest) at 36 degrees of elevation. You can make a little test jig with an old telescope or camera tripod and a couple paper towel tubes taped together. Set it up, set the elevation with a inclinometer or protractor, lock it, and rotate it to the right direction and look through the tube. If you see green (or brown, or branches), move around :)

If you have a big enough lot you may be able to use a pole mount away from the house. I have a second account at a summer house in northern Michigan and up there we use a chainsaw to fix LOS problems.

Do a Google search for "sun moon satellite directv" and you'll come up with several suggestions on using the sun or moon to determine if you have LOS for the 99, 101 and 103 satellites.
One web site is http://gjullien.fr/satellite.htm
I thought there was an easier one to use, but I can't find it.
The best time to use it is about the first week in March or October.
Using that web site, you check to see what time the sun or moon will be in the same location in the sky as the satellites. Any location where you can see the sun will work.

I have a link in my signature to an old thread that describes how to use this. But now I find that the Dishpointer site is much easier and just as accurate.

its slow this time a year, so they were probably looking for any possible place to get some los lol, but yeah, even doing that 5-10 minutes is all you need.

The Dishpointer site is helpful but I personally had a hard time determining tree height so I put an app on my android phone so I could see where the sats are. I used Satellite Finder from Infinity Software, it was less expensive than Dishpointer's app. So if you have a smart phone it may be worth a few bucks so you can scan your entire property for a spot. At least you can figure exactly which trees to knock down!

I looked at dishpointer before and as you mentioned hard to determine tree heights.

I have a stihl chainsaw but have no idea what I could trim or if any trimming would help, they didn't point out anything in particular. If it's someone elses trees I'm screwed I guess. It's an older residential neighborhood so I'm not in the woods which would actually be easier.

P&P is 'they're not allowed to'.

Depending on HOW bad you want satellite, you can wait three weeks, and for about 5 days, the sun will track the entire satellite belt. You can use a free online app to determine the exact time the sun will be directly behind the satellites, and look for a spot where the sun shines on your yard/roof. Then mark that spot, and the dish will work there.
