I'm out checking the installation of our DirectTV HR20 and 5LNB Dish... I know we are supposed ot have a Zinwell 68 Switch right? Well, were would this be located and what does it look like?

Thanks for the help in advance.

It could be outside or inside. It's a box with 4 inputs in and 8 out I believe. It has to be between the dish and the receivers somewhere as the 4 outputs from the dish go to the 4 inputs on the switch. And then the lines go to however many receivers you have.
also only needed for more than 4 lines (hr20 takes 2)

The Zinwell 68WB should be located out of the weather [inside], has 6 inputs & 8 outputs [68WB]. The four dish outputs [4 cables] need to go to the inputs. If you had a second dish, it would go to the remaining inputs.
Mine was installed outside... Under the eves of my house. I was told it doesn't need to be inside... Bad info?
Since I'm not seeing one, should I contact them? I haven't been having very many problems.... the occasional re-boot and a black screen bug last week.

Thoughts?

Thanks everyone for the help!

It sounds like it's out of the rain, so should be OK.

How many inputs do you need? If you only need four [or less] you're fine. If you have more units installed and you need it D* will install one. Just one less thing to go wrong if you don't need it.

The first installer installed mine right on the roof :eek2: I made the second installer put it inside.

I've heard that it's okay to be outside and your's sound like it should be fine, I just know that I've had issues with shorts in cables before from moisture, so I figured inside would be the best.

I believe it's made to install outside also, but as with anything placed outside, it won't last as long and could possibly give you problems due to the elements.

I would either install it inside, or protect it by placing it under the eaves, or even enclose it.

Exactly. What I was trying to say is that mine was installed right on top of the roof, totally exposed to the elements. That scared me.

It seems like the southern california installers are not as picky when it comes to placing things out of the weather. I don't know about your situation but for me it is probably better to have something like that outside, but out of the sun, than in the attic. My attic gets to be 130-140 during the summer. It used to trip the circuit breakers in the overhead fluorescent lights until I replaced the ballasts with higher-quality ones.

I wouldn't limit to southern california. "Installers are not picky" might be better.
Anywhere temp. or moisture could be a problem, would be what I meant.
