No optical output on the hr 34 so I use Digital coaxial cable from my Yamaha receiver with is a DVD/LD output so I cannot use the sat/D-tv from the receiver so no surround sound.Maybe I am doing something wrong or my receiver is out dated any ideas anyone?

You have something set up wrong. Did you make sure to turn doolby digital on in the HR34's menu?
Are you getting any sound from the Yamaha receiver at all? What does it claim the audio is being sent to it as 2 channel PCM?
