A couple of months ago I cut my DirecTV service way back, going from Premiere to Family, and returned one DVR for two reasons. One was the cost. The other was that I had been given a Tivo Premiere Elite and just loved it - we had both cable and DTV for many years because of different channel offerings. But after getting the Premiere Elite I found myself almost never watching DirecTV. I particularly liked the ease with which I could switch between the four tuners, which were all four always on, each with its own 30-minute buffer.

But I do find myself missing all of the DirecTV HD movie and sports channels.

So, if I restored my DirecTV service and got an HR34, how easy would it be to switch between the 5 tuners. How exactly do the five tuners work? Is each one always active with its own buffer.

Thanks to anyone who can enlighten me.

Nope, they all aren't being buffered, unless they're in use.
Double play, or PiP will have two being buffered, but the other three would need to be recording.

The HR34 is like the HR2x in that it has only one 90 minute buffer active, but you can turn on Double Play to get a second 90 minute buffered tuner. The HR34 does have a quirk though that if you put it in standby and then turn it on, the buffer might be wiped out.
