I have VIP 722.... it gets switched off /on quite a lot.... recently I experienced "Hard Drive Failure" that I managed to fix temporarily by leaving the PVR unplugged for a night....
Does Switching the PVR on/off frequently may damage the HDD? Is it a good idea leave the PVR on ALL the time?

Turning it on and off doesn't do anything to the hard drive. Sounds like your hard drive is dying. I would think leaving your DVR on all the times is harder on the drive than turning it on and off. If it's on, it's always buffering the selected channel. That's constant use.
