I have an HR20 and an R15 with 3 lines running from the dish to the receivers, leaving me one tuner short. So I am going to get an SWM and have a source for either the SWM-5 or SWM-8.

Other than the ability to add additional tuners in the future, is there any reason not to use the SWM-5? If I understand correctly, I can connect the HR20 with the SWM and the R15 with the two legacy ports. Have looked around the forum and haven't found any issues with the SWM-5 but wanted to ask.

One other question: if I'm using only the one line to the HR20, do I still need the splitter for the SWM line?

SWM5 have been discontinued and SWM8 is all that is made now.
Each DVR only needs one cable to feed both tuners.
I understand that the SWM5 has been discontinued but have a used one I can buy.

To your point about only needing one cable for both tuners, I thought from the research I've done on the forum that the R15 isn't compatible with SWM and will need to use the legacy ports - is that correct?

Regardless, the questions still stand:

1. Other than the ability to add additional tuners in the future, is there any reason not to use the SWM-5?

2. If I'm using only the one line to the HR20, do I still need the splitter for the SWM line or can I connect it directly to the HR20?

Yes, you will have to use the legacy ports for the R-15. No, you will not need to split the SWM line to the HR20...just connect it to SAT 1. No reason to get the SWM8 unless you plan to have more than 5 SWM tuners in the future.

A SWM5 will work as a SWM8 does, but one less legacy port, no OTA input, and only 5 SWM tuners total.
R15 would need to legacy port(s).
The SWM5 has two SWM outputs.
You can either connect two HR20s to both of these or use FTM #1 and split it to feed two HR20s.
Each HR20 only needs one cable input
