SWM for existing customer?

I just successfully swapped out my Slimline 5 LNB for the SWMLine LNB, and everything works great! What a great product. However, I've got a question that someone else asked me today.

If an existing customer just bought a HR21 for a new room in his house (a "man" room that has just been built and is going to require a new cable drop), and his Slimline dish is already "tapped out" with all 4 outlets currently being used by other receivers in his house, can he get D* to install a SWM 4 or SWM 8 as part of a service call (he is going to need a service call for the cable drop anyway)? Or does he have to buy the SWM himself and install it himself? I know that this has just gone "mainstream" but I didn't know if the SWM products were available through D* or not?

He'll most likely have to go DIY. SWM is for new customers and SWM8 modules are for commercial customers only.
Unless he really need SWM technology he can just use a WB68 switch.

Will D* include this (WB68) as part of a service call if he needs it, or is this DIY also?
I got tired of waiting and installed a SWM8 myself. The first time I initiated a service call (a few months ago), the technician showed up empty handed and had no idea what I was talking about. Apparently, this guy (or his boss) never bothered to read the service order, because I specifically asked the DirecTV CSR to state in the order that I was after a SWM8 module.
assuming he's going beyond 4 tuners some sort of multiswitch will be included in the install. It most likely will be a wb68.

If the work order calls for one it will be supplied. but to add an extra line [ or two in case of DVR] it will have to be a AO work order. I think AO is $45 but not sure.

He wants a UPGRADE work order not a service call. Techs can't add equipment on service calls, just replace/repair.

Based upon what information. I know for a fact that SWM8s are being installed in residential installs.

It wouldn't have mattered; aside from initial field trials, the SWM-8 is not used for residential installs, meaning that installers can't get them, HSP warehouses don't stock them, and DirecTV won't pay for them. SWM-8's are, at this time, only used for commercial installs.

At this time, SWM LNBs have JUST been rolled out nationally, and business rules limit these to NEW customers who order HD, 4 or more rooms, and at least one DVR. They are not authorized for existing customers, yet.

We all know that at some point, as supplies of SWM dishes (LNBs, really) grows, DirecTV will start officially allowing them to be used for existing customers who have all SWM-supported receivers, but DirecTV has apparently decided it does NOT want to have to swap out non-SWM-capable receivers for existing customers just to allow SWM installs, so existing customers are currently limited to "legacy" (non-SWM) dishes and switches, and probably will be for some time.

I am sure those are part of 'special projects' division. Normal techs don't have them.
There were field trials of the SWM-8 in residential applications, but it seems that early on, DirecTV decided that only SWM-LNBs would be used in residential installs (when SWM technology was used at all). I'm sure cost was a factor, and also production rate of the SWM-8, and the high demand from MDU providers trying to upgrade their older systems to support HD, were also factors.

Anyway, the use of SWM-8s for residential work is the exception, not the rule.
