Tech Association Endorses Satellite Combo

The Association for Competitive Technology recently filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission and Department of Justice in support of the proposed merger between EchoStar and DirecTV.

Representing more than 3,000 information technology companies, ACT said it believes this merger will enable a combined company "to finally deliver true broadband access to rural areas, spurring economic growth and delivering valuable telemedicine and distance learning applications."

The group cited research from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and Rural Utilities Service that said less than 5 percent of towns with populations of 10,000 or fewer have cable modem or DSL service. The primary reason for slower deployment of cable and DSL systems in rural areas is economic, the organization said.

"The reality is that satellite broadband will be the only means of delivering broadband service to these areas in the near future. Unfortunately, these satellite providers will need to make major upgrades in technology to make it happen," said Jonathan Zuck, president of ACT.
