Forgive me if this has been asked already, I did a quick search but did not find anything.

I am switching from D* to E*, the installer is coming on Friday to install the VIP622. Instead of taking down the D* dish, I was wondering if the dish can just be reaimed? I realize that the HD E* package I order need so point to 3 satellites, so what I was thinking is that the existing dish could point to 129 and a new dish could point to 110/119.

For a technical stand point, is there anything preventing a D* dish to work with a E* receiver, maybe the LBN perhaps?

Thanks!!

First it is a LNB (Low Noise Blockdownconverter).

Second original single LNB 18" dish for D* is the same as a Legacy E* LNB.

Phase 3 satellite D* uses a special LNB for 110 that only sees 3 transponders and a switching signal that is not compatible with E*.

If your switching it should be FREE if your a new customer so switch everything.:)

About the only thing that can be "recycled" is the RG-6 and the mast. On top of the different LNB's the shape of the E* dish is different than the D* since it's optomized for 101, 110, 119 while E* is optomized for 110, (118) 119, 129.

Well the shape doesnt matter that much. When I wanted to get 129 into the mix cause of HD Locals I just unbolted my 500 pan and swapped it with an old 3 slot D* pan I had laying around and that works ok for 110/119/129.

Let DirecTV come out and put up a new dish.. if you are getting a mpeg4 HD receiver they will install the required 5-lnb dish and a wideband switch with 8 outlets.. in which case they will replace everything including the mast.. the new 5-lnb dishes require a larger mast.

Be sure to tell DirecTV you are trying to decide between them and dish.. they will throw a good deal or two at you just to win you over. I highly recommend doing that deal directly with DirecTV as well.

Slimline and AT-9 will not work because of the switch type, or Zinwell. Legacy 18" dish or legacy LNBF's should be alright.

Some people in the Bay Area get slightly higher signal strength values from a 2nd dish pointed directly at 129 instead of the single Dish 1000 pointed to all three. The Dish 1000 is larger, but gets it done with a single dish. The esthetics of the setup don't matter at all to me where mine are located, but are a legitimate issue for others. The installer could easily replace the DirecTV LNB with a DishPro LNB on your current dish and connect it to a DPP Twin on a new Dish 500. It would depend on whether the current location is obstructed when turned to 129 instead of 101.

Azimuth: 147.9°
Elevation: 41.2°

Satellite: 129.0°W
Azimuth: 191.4°
Elevation: 45.8°

That 43° difference could be an issue.

If the installer wants to put up the Dish 1000, I'd let him and just keep the existing dish where it is. The installation comes with its own 90 day "warranty" so if you have signal problems with 129, you can have them come back and move the 129 LNB from the 1000 to the DirecTV dish (or do it yourself if so inclined).

EDIT Afterthought - you can get the same programming from 61.5 that you can from 129. The SF HD Locals are on 119. There would be one advantage to 61.5 over 129. It is a VERY low Elevation here, but gives me higher signal strength than 129.

I use it to get WCBS-DT from NY, but have no idea if that will continue after Friday's "adjustments".
