This week's issue of The BRIDGE focuses on the political atmosphere for multi-platform players.

Election day 2006 will be one to carefully watch, particularly with all of the rewriting of telecommunications legislation, a transition to all digital services, mega mergers and knotty arguments between new and old medias being front and center in D.C. National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA) president and CEO Kyle McSlarrow says, "We divide the world into two parts. One is telecommunications reform generally and the other is the digital transition."

According to The Center for Responsive Politics, as of Sept. 11, 2006, telephone utilities like AT&T, Verizon and the U.S. Telecom Association had spent more than $6 million in contributions to federal candidates and parties. The bulk of that went to Republicans who tend to dislike the notion of net neutrality regulation. Cable TV's spending on federal candidates and parties by key companies and associations topped $4.5 million. Money from cable operators like Comcast went mostly to Republicans.

If Republicans retain control of both Houses, it's fairly clear that net neutrality is off the table, at least for this legislative cycle.
