I've noticed in some of the discussions that dish net is apparently switching from mpeg2 to mpeg4, but what exactly does this mean for me? will I see improved picture quality? I'm just curious.

They are different compression schemes. Generally mpeg4 can compress video more effectively. It could mean two things. One is better picture quality using the same amount of bandwidth as mpeg2 or it could mean more channels per satellite transponder with the same picture quality..... count on the second happening.
