With that....

You now can download the ViiV media server, for those systems that are ViiV certified.
http://www.directv.com/viiv

And the "official" DirecTV ViiV discussion forum is now available.

Cool that sounds very good, if you have an Intell (InHell) ViiV based system.

With that said, my question is does D* have any plans to make HR20 play nice with AMD and other non ViiV systems. I ask becouse AMD is VERY popular with gamers, and others. Most of wich will not give up there AMD systems for anything.

That being said, I do know and have working WMP 11 on my AMD system, but with out the fourms, I would not have known about that or other options.

Thanks
Andrew

Actually, the Intel Core Duo 2 series is a better chip for gaming than anything AMD has on the market at this time.

Anyways, I think that DirecTV is in bed with Intel and Microsoft for now.

Being Intell ViiV certified, doesn't mean it won't work with other Media Servers on PC's.

Plenty of Discussion of other options all over.

D* being in bed with M$ is not a big surpise, if you want your system to play nice with PC than it has to play with M$. As far as Intell and AMD go there are a lot of both systems out there that are not viiv. On top of that viiv looks to me like a passing fad, much like the tun of other crap out there. On top of all of that Apple has a hudge foot hold in the music and photo world with the IPOD, and Itunes. Almost every other PC has Itunes on it in the home

Does opting in to the public trial beta allow users to get the 10B update if they don't already have it?
Nope, you'll have it in a few minutes anyway...

:) I thought I was keeping up! heh - I guess I'll get it soon then, no biggie.

I just tried installing the Viiv software on my XP machine - no go. I don't know how I feel about that. This whole thing is wayyy to proprietary.

Why do you think DirecTV is in bed with Microsoft?

The HR20 is simply ViiV certified, which means it complies with a certain set of standards that Intel has set. nothing more... Nothing less.

The ViiV aspect that is with "Windows" is on the Intel side of things, not the DirecTV side of things.

If you do a search there are more products getting ViiV certified. Acer just release a TV that was ViiV certified... are they in bed with Microsoft too?

There are at least three "other" products out there, that work to serve up the files to the HR20.. Twonky, WMP11, and there was another thrown about... and I am sure they are others. Twonky works on just about every platform I have heard of.

As for iTunes... 7 computers in this house, only one with iTunes... and that was because she won the iPod.

ViiV software is ONLY for ViiV certified system.

As has been shown for the last week or so, there are other options out there for access media files.

Only because of the Xbox 360 and the portable media software stuff (you know what I'm talking about, right?) that they announced at CES. not because of the Viiv products at all though.

I understand, but I was just checking it to see if it would install on a non-Viiv system. It may have been looking for WMCE, the hardware or all of the above.

I understand the need to set a performance standard - but the actual specs produces by the Viiv combination of hardware and software is not limited to that combination.

I guess it depends on whether the HR20 performs better with the Viiv software than with WMP or another server.. if that doesn't make a difference, then there's really no compatibility issue.

My intent wasn't to start a pissing contest here. Viiv is a good marketing tool, as it is. After being on D*'s sight it made it look like you had to have a Viiv PC with Media Center for this option to work at all. There for it makes it look like D*, Intel, and M$ are all in it together.

I also have tryed Twonky, and WMP11 both work well, with out being supported by D*

With the power of iTunes beeing in 1.7 million households according to PC world, and Apple's systems already haveing Viiv. If I'm not mistaken Itunes is also Viiv, but apple wants to make there owne vod player so... I killed that thought with this report http://news.com.com/DirecTVs+Viiv+box+almost+ready+for+prime+time/2100-1041_3-6119790.html

I hope D* will not freeze out the Mac users. I tried Twonky as many other have and can only view photos. It has an X next to the adio files. someone called twonky and was told there was no Mac plugin. I tried EyeConnect 1.1 (Made for Mac)and it sees the HR20 as "DIRECTV PLUS HD DVR" in the device pane. Twonky had it as "generic media receiver. I could at least access the audio files(music symbol next to song) with eyeconnect, but when I try to play ithem all i hear is white noise. I went to the technical form on the website "
Michael,

In researching your problem, I seem to have found this discussion you have participated in, about this DVR:

http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=73279&page=2

Have you received any help from other users?

I'm wondering about what exact formats your DVR supports for UPnP AV use - do you have a list or URL?

I'm also wondering if the bitrate of the MP3 file could come into play. Perhaps you could compare the specifics of a MP3 on your Mac, and one from the PC you've tested.

We have no other reports from users of this DVR about anything related to EyeConnect, so this is the first time I've heard this problem.

It could be how you encoded the files, or it could be how EyeConnect is sending them. One way to test that is to find out if your DVR supports something other than MP3 (like WAV), and test that.

I've you can find a supported movie format, then try that too, to see if the soundtrack has the same problem.
