The cable channel created for the Mountain West Conference - the Mtn - is shutting down and will go dark May 31, sources said. The channel's 44 employees were informed of the decision late this afternoon during a meeting at their Denver HQs. Sources indicate that CBS Sports Network and the Mountain West Conference are close to finalizing a deal for the conference's rights that will wind up increasing national distribution for the Mountain West's upcoming football and basketball games.

Don't forget that you've got the new megaconference in the works in the wake of the coming merger between the Mountain West and Conference USA at the end of the 2012-13 academic year.

Of course when you realize that instead of two bids to the NCAA basketball tournament, you'll get only one after the merger, you think twice about actually merging.

Actually, I think they were looking at the football dollars (which go up for grabs after next season) when they decided to merge (and yeah, it's a done-deal; nobody knows what the name will be yet, though). I don't think the basketball bids weighed that much into the discussions.

There is no need for space in order to add the Longhorn Network. They do not have to take a channel off in order to add a new one. If you inveneted the Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread Channel and everyone understood how great it was, DirecTV (and every other provider) could and would add it tommorrow. There would be no backroom discusson about which channel to delete in order to clear the space. There is extra space held in reserve at all times.

The issue with the LN is one of programming. Two football games, one of those being versus a I-AA team, and six basketball games, againist lightweights. The rest of the time being filled with minor sports that they let people in Austin attend in person for free. Its 20 hours of content crammed into 2000 hours. And all of that about one team. From a single state, with lots of other sports loyalties in that state with a complex quilt, and no real traction out of state.

CUSA and MWC are merging (some uninformed articles to the contrary are just that, uninformed), and I suspect the mtn will relaunch as a channel for that league.

Guide space is needed for channels as well and the 600 range is packed.

Not restricted to 600s. They put rugby and soccer in the 400s. That includes non-premium games.

soccer fits in the Spanish area.
And rugby?

They could easily make the 400s extra sports. That was my point.

They could also group alternates as -2, -3, etc. (not sure if SD machines could handle that....) A lot of the 600s are alternates. For example, BTN could be 610, 610-1, 610-2, 610-3.

Numbers on Directv are fake.
