I am thinking about getting HD,
I have an old 500 dish, I saw on here some people don't like the new Dish 1000 dish.
I live in the Washington DC area, would a Dish 1000 work or shold I get a extra single dish ?
Thanks for any help

The DC area does not have a proper line of sight for 129. You will need a wing dish aimed at 61.5.
Yup. That's what we have - works great and the 622 is hard to beat!

Dish will provide everything you need if you do a Dish'n it up upgrade. This is especially important if you need a DPP44 multiswitch ($$$).

If I were bound and determined to DIY:
  • Acquire a Dish500 and a DishPro+ (DPP) Twin
  • Turn the existing Dish500 towards 61.5
  • Install the new dish for 110 and 119
As you didn't let on much about your current system nor what your desired setup is, this may or may not provide enough outputs to do what you want.

Note that Dish Network is decidedly discouraging self-installs. They figure that, in general, the money they save on the installation is consumed in support effort.

:) I had dish over a year ago, I owned my own equ.
After a year my apartments made me take it down so I went with cable.
I kept the Sat dish 500 but got rid of everything else.
I want to but my own equ not lease.
Where I am moving I can have one. :)
I have nothing but bad luck with cable.
I can still access my old account on Dish, I guess thats a good sign.
Thanks for the help

Depending on what equipment you have, you may want to use DishMover just to make sure your lnb's are the same type and will work together with the lnb you will need for 61.5.

Interesting. I've performed 3-4 installations at 3 different locations, and have had no problems. Then again, I have a master's in electrical engineering, and I don't find the process that hard (other than figuring out what LNBs and switches to get). Personally, I like to have control over my systems.

In my current house in CT, I need to cut down some trees, which will likely happen this coming Spring. Could I install everything but whatever switches I need and have the installers give me the switches and the receivers? I'd probably need all new receivers, as all my old receivers do not support Dish Pro.

Would a 18 inch dish from directv work and a directv LNB work on Dish
YES, the dish and LNB are the same as what you would find on a single sat Legacy setup with DISH. You would have to have a legacy switch (say a SW64?) to be able to use the dish and LNB for 61.5 or 129. If you have a DP switch, you could use the dish for a side sat but you'd need to replace the LNB with a DP LNB.

DirecTV Oval (3 sat) use a different LNB for 110 and the SWITCH is not compatible. A Phase II Oval doesn't have the switch integrated and can be used for DISH if you move the 101 LNB into the center position for 110.

NO Directv LNB'S don't work w/E* systems.
That's not entirely true. There are many E* subscribers using D* dish setups. It isn't something that you would want to chase after and compatibility with DishPro equipment (but not DPP?) may be complicated.
