I bought a Samsung SIR-TS360 directv receiver thinking I would just use it as an over the air HD tuner for local channels but what the hey, I suppose I may just use it as my new Directv receiver as well.

I have an R10 currently.

I see a real good buy on Ebay for a Funai DSA20MA triple LNB dish so I thought I may get one and see what HD is all about.

I understand the very latest H20 receivers are mpeg4 compatible and this (ultimately) would be the way to go?

The Samsung not being mpeg4 compatible?

I would assume the Funai 3 LNB dish will be ok when I eventually want to get an H20 receiver?

Thanks kindly for any answers.

You will need a 5-LNB AT9 dish (or the new 5-LNB slimline dish). The 3-LNB will NOT work for the MPEG4 satellite feeds.

Currently the only MPEG4 compatible devices are the H20 receiver and the HR20 DVR.

Your old equipment will work properly with the 5-LNB dish.

The Samsung can receive DirecTV's MPEG2 HD Channels (those in the 70's & 80's, like ESPN-HD, HDNet, etc), but it cannot receive the new MPEG4 HD Locals. It does, of course, have an HDTV over-the-air tuner, too for you local HDTV stations, but you'll need an OTA antenna for those.

The 3LNB Phase III dish will allow you to receive the MPEG2 HD channels, but not the new MPEG4 local HD channels.

Hey thanks alot.

I like straight answers.

Don't know what I'll do.....bought the Samsung just to watch NFL HD over the local
VHF stations...so maybe I'll just stick with the R10 and do that, and wait till the mpeg4 "packages" come down in price.

But I did see a triple LNB dish for only 20 bucks so who knows?

By the way, on another issue, can I use my current Directv access card on the Samsung SIR-TS360 if need be? (It doesn't have a card now).

My current receiver is an R10.

Thanks again.

Generally, no. But sometimes you'll get a friendly CSR that will let you activate a used Receiver with a different Receiver's access card. The general policy is to send you a new access card for ~$20. Hopefully that Samsung was used on a "clean" DirecTV account, or might have other problems getting DirecTV to activate it (for example, if the previous owner didn't pay their PPV bills).

Thanks.

Well, if they're going to be inconsistent about it, I'll just say... "That's not what they told me when I called 2 weeks ago".

Works every time.
