I am thinking of adding an HR34 or another HR24 to my MRV setup.

Lets say I add the HR34 where the HR24 is now & move the HR24 to another room. I know that when I pull up the list on the H24 I can watch whatever is recorded on either DVR and the same with the HR34 & HR24. The questions I have are:

1)When I set a recording on the H24 which DVR will it record too?

2)When I set up a recording on the HR34 or HR24 will those only record on the specific DVR you setup the recording on or do they just go wherever?

1. If it's an H24, and not a typo when you meant HR24, you can select what DVR the recording is made on. If you meant HR24 then the recording would take place on the HR24.

2. If you set a recording on a DVR, HR34 or HR24, then the recording is made on that DVR.

So I can setup my stuff on one of them, the wife & kids on the other and of course watch them on all the TV's?

The H24-100 is not a DVR, just HD to access the MRV; so on this one when I set a recording from it, which DVR will it record too?

Correct

Whichever one you choose. When you set the recording you have a dropdown where you can choose the DVR you want to record.

Great! I was hoping that was the way it worked.

Which DVR would you suggest adding, the HR34 or another HR24?

I see where there seems to be some issues with the HR34, looks like I may want to wait if I go with that one.

HR34, you can record 5 shows at a time vs 2 and it has 1TB of storage vs 500GB.

You can order the 34 from DirecTV. You can't order the HR24. You order HD DVR and they send you what they have. The only way to get a new HR24 is through a third party retailer.

Look at your recording habits to see whether you need to add a 5-tuner DVR or will two additional tuners from any of the HD DVR boxes meet your needs.

Then call and find out what kind of pricing you can get. The 34 could cost you $399 while another HD DVR would only be $199.

If I go with the HR34 what would they have to change, if anything, about my current dish setup?

You currently have an HR24 and an H24, and want to add an HR34? That should not require a change to dish or LNB, as you will remain within an 8 tuner limit total (5 in the HR34, 2 in the HR24 and 1 in the H24).

Should you exceed 8 tuners, then you will need a different LNB assembly, which in turn would require four coax (rather than one) from the dish into your house.

So the SWM-3 will handle up to 8 tuners? Above that they would have to change or swap something else?

Thanks for the help guys.

I think you mean your LNB is actually called a "Slimline-3S" (or SL-3S) and contains an integrated "SWiM-8" multiswitch, thus the "S" in the SL-3S.

Based on your signature though you already have four satellite tuners with an HR24, H24, and H23. So if you add an HR34 that will bring you to a total of nine tuners to be supported. Therefore your current SWM LNB will need to be swapped out for a legacy SL-3 (without the "S") LNB which has four outputs to feed a SWiM-16 external module, which as the name implies can support up to 16 tuners.

Thanks HoTat2 for the info. I assume D* will do the swap out at no additional charge? Maybe?

BTW how is ole Lame Kiffen working out for ya? Looks we will need to make another change if this season does not produce alot better results.
