Sony Pictures has apparently signed deals with Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi for a fourth and fifth installment in the film franchise. No word yet in regards to whether or not Kirsten Dunst will be back as Mary Jane Watson in the two upcoming films. In regards to villains in the next two films, the names being mentioned/rumored are:
Lizard
Man-Wolf
Black Cat
Vulture
Carnage
Both of the films may be filmed concurrently.Spider-Man 4 is tentatively scheduled for a May 2011 theatrical release.

I find this surprising, interesting and hopeful! I'm surprised because I thought the franchise was done for a while (based on everything said when #3 was released) and I'm hopeful that the next two will return to the form of #1 and #2 because #3 was pretty crappy in comparison. The decision to cram the two villians plus Harry's transformation into the Green Goblin was just too much and it ruined the type of character development they were able to do so well in the first two.

If Kirsten bails on it (why would she, does she have that many better offers - maybe playing another tennis player :dozey: ?) maybe they will bring Gwen Stacey to the forefront for a while (even though she was technically before MJ in the comic book series IIRC) and bring in a better known actress to play her.

Well, score a few more dollars in the bank for Mr. Maguire. Perhaps by 2011 I'll have forgotten how disappointed I was with Spider-Man 3 and be willing to see what the next two movies are about.

They've put down the foundation already for the Lizard and to some extent Man-Wolf... so those would be fine. They might even be able to successfully put both in one film if they do it right.

The Vulture could make for some really cool fight scenes... so that would be nice as well.

Carnage is a big meh from me. Never really liked Venom anyway, and Carnage is not substantially different really. I hope that one dies a quick death in the brain before making to a script.

As for Film #3... I liked the Harry storyline, and the Sandman storyline... but really could have done without all the Venom stuff. If we had Harry going bad and redemption + Sandman going bad and redemption for him, it would have been a common thread. They could even have left the bit with the alien costume but stopped that part after Spidey frees himself... thus saving Venom for a completely different film if they wanted to pick that thread up and run with it.

Great points and I agree completely, the movie would have been much better IMO with that structure.

Here is one more article from reelzchannel.com.

http://www.reelzchannel.com/article/706/the-future-of-spider-man

It is stated in this article that Sony has given the green-light to 3 more Spidey films.
It also states that Sam Raimi has agreed to stay with the franchise as producer and director.
If that article is accurate, there should be at least 6 films in the franchise.

WOW!! I really thought this thing was done after 3. I hope they re-inject some life into it as I'm a huge webhead and have loved Spidey since I learned to read.
