Top 10 markets without HD LIL (current or announced)

#63 Lexington KY
#65 Charleston/Huntington WV
#67 Roanoke/Lynchburg VA
#79 Columbia SC
#83 Huntsville AL
#84 Shreveport LA
#90 Jackson MS
#92 Tri-Cities TN *
#114 Lansing MI
#118 Montgomery/Selma AL

* 72.5 DMA

Indicates DISHNETWORK provides HD LIL in this market. Not all network channels are available.

Other stats:

Mean/median of announced markets: 104.93/102.5

Mean/median without 72.5/99/103 DMA's: 79.875/83

Highest DMA: #43 Norfolk VA
Lowest DMA: #190 Butte/Bozeman MT

Lowest non 72.5/99/103 DMA: #109 Springfield/Holyoke MA

Non-served/announced 72.5 DMA's

#92 Tri-Cities TN
#135 Wausau/Rhinleander WI

So it seems D* made an effort to serve the 72.5 slot and others already on the 99/103 as of the 44 announced DMA's 28 were served SD by the 72.5 or 99/103 slots.

Let me know if any of the markets are incorrect.

Edit: Updated list to reflect Altoona coming online and Springfield announcement. Also updated DMA ranks for 2008-2009.

Edit 2: Updates list to reflect which of the Top 10 Markets DISHNetwork was providing HD LIL service.

I'm sorry. What do the stars mean next to the market names? I have friends in the Springfield, MO, market....
Sorry, it signifies the 72.5 DMA's in the top 10. I updated the post.
Dont forget El Paso #98th
I was really hoping for Lansing, MI to be included before the end of the year. Just have to wait for another 6-12 months.

Love my OTA, hope my HR20 and H20 don't die. Will need an AM21 when the basement is finished and add another DVR

El Paso is on the announced list for 2008.

I guess I feel a little better knowing that 9 other larger DMA's were dissed ahead of us (Johnstown/Altoona). :bang
sucks being in the largest dissed DMA though. :(
Juppers,

Have you contacted any of the stations to get their response?

Herdfan, thanks for your work on this. I am in the Jackson, MS market and I emailed the 4 major stations on my market to ascertain if they had any info. The response from D* to my email was "soon," lol.
actually, syracuse ny is 82 or 83 and we dont have hd lil yet, although it's slated for late summer fall release, if that's what you meant

Yes, these are the top 10 markets in DMA rank that 1)Do not currently have HD LIL's or 2) are not one of the 44 new markets on the DirecTV Press Release dated July 28, 2008.
At number 42..Norfolk/Virginia Beach, VA is your true leader. Sure there's lots of talk or plans (Oct08) about when we'll get local HD, but until I see it, we're the KING!:hurah:

But at least you're announced.

Yeah. DMA # 64.... What tha ??????
To add a little, of the 3 60's markets left out: #64 Lexington, #65 Charleston/Huntington and #67 Roanoke/Lynchburg, combined they have 1,418,790 households or 1.258%.

That would collectively put them between #19 Orlando and #20 Sacremento/Stockton/Modesto. That's a lot of folks to be left out.

To take it further, I wonder how many of the smallest markets on the list would it take to get to 1,418,790 households?

I actually started to look at that a while back, how the idea of dedicating bandwidth and equipment to 2 or 3 smaller DMAs that might make up one of the unserved DMAs could make fiscal sense.

Rockford IL, Bangor ME, and Dothan AL DMAs total 430000 households, Springfield MO has 411000. Thats 3 receive facilities, maybe 12 channels on most likely 3 different spotbeams, versus 1 receive facility, 4 channels on 1 spotbeam to serve essentially the same number of people.

I am sure they can justify it in their own camp, but it would be interesting to hear the explanation.

On another note, Springfield MO was announced in Oct '06, at that time it was ranked 76 or 77, it is now 74th largest DMA, and evidently off the radar for HD LiLs anytime soon. Again it would be interesting to hear how that decision was made.

If they had announced ALL 72.5 markets, it would have made more sense. They need to move those markets off that slot. But to not do them all and leave 4 markets in the 60-70's range makes no sense.

I know in the case of #65 Charleston/Huntington it IS NOT related to carriage agreements as 3 stations are under blanket agreements (2 SBG, 1 Gray) and I have an email from the owner of the other that a carriage agreement is in place.

And they probably need to turn on both Lexington and Huntington at the same time or those in the bordering counties will "move" (Not advocating it, just saying it could happen)

And the answer to the previous question, it has taken over 9 of the smallest DMA's to provide service to the same number of customers as the 3 in the 60's. The 9 smallest have 1,287,770 households with an average of 143,138.

If you add in Springfield at #74 with 410,930 households, it takes over 11 markets to serve the number of customers in the top 4.

Announcements mean nothing to me. I believe we were announced about the same time last year that we would have HD Locals by the end of 2007. That went no where. I know some of the local stations have finally worked things out with DirecTV, but until I see it on my screen...I won't believe it.
#82

Oh well, at least Shreveport is on THIS list. :)
