I ran into this looking for an upconverting DVD. I have not seen a 1080p one before

Yes but I wonder... has there ever been a 480p/24 DVD? It will only play 1080p/24 if the source is 24 frames.
They had to do something with all those unsold HD-A30's...
They can have mine back
I don't understand why anyone would want an upconverting
DVD player that won't also play Blu-ray discs.
Toshiba's approach sure does have the appearance of a sore loser that can't come to grips with accepting the winner...Blu Ray.
Thing is... Blu ray didn't "win". Toshiba and HD DVD quit rather than potentially lose... but this does not equate to a Blu ray win.

(Full disclosure... I own an HD-A3 HD DVD player and a Samsung BD-UP5000 combo Blu ray/HD DVD player.)

I never understood why, when the prices came down, anyone would buy an upconverting player over an HD-A3 HD DVD player... but people still did. THAT is the biggest obstacle Blu ray has yet to overcome.

There simply are not yet enough "critical mass" people who feel they need Blu ray over upconversion. Unless they have a 50"+ Widescreen TV, they probably won't notice all the extra definition anyway. Also, even people who are now buying HDTVs are just seeing all their old DVDs in widescreen for the first time and are suitably impressed with that enough to postpone upgrading to Blu.

Also consider that stores like Best Buy have probably 20:1 or more DVD vs Blu ray available aisle space and 20,000:1 or more choices of DVDs over Blu ray movie/TV shows to buy and watch.

DVD didn't become an overnight success... don't expect Blu ray to either.

Meanwhile, Toshiba would be foolish not to take advantage of people who still want to watch DVDs and don't want to pay 3x the price for the player or the movies to buy Blu ray yet.

Sure it does.... ;)
Why do I have a feeling that this will spawn into a second war thread?

Must have missed that one on your "Wrong Decisions" list.

If you have a large collection of DVDs and just bought a fancy 1080p TV it might make sense to spend $75 on an up-converter, like a Toshiba SD-6100, until Blu-ray Disc becomes more mainstream and affordable in a couple of years.

That's how I advised my nephew and his setup looks quite nice.

I am interested in seeing how Toshiba pulls this off. Upconversion is a tricky process.

As far as Blu-Ray, it has a long way to go. Mainstream for the format is still years away if ever. Internet, cable and satellite based HD content is catching up fast.

Samsung has had 2 upconverting 1080P units since last year... less than $70 from Amazon.

Actually that was the reason I started the wrong decisions list...

I think there's a time for an upconverting DVD player and this is probably it. By the holidays I expect a 40% price drop in Blu-Ray players.

You make a good point, Chas. I just sold my five-year old, 53" Panny RPTV today and I'll be replacing it with a 65" Mitsu 1080p for my new house, which I'll be closing on tomorrow. Giving thought to what you said, I might just spring for the upconverting DVD player so I can squeeze the hi-res PQ out of my standard DVD collection.
