Well, it finally happened. Now, our lovely HR20 won't do a thing. I power it up, turn on the TV, select the right input, and nothing, no picture, no nothing. Just sits there. I can't power it down with the on/off button, nothing is functioning. I just did a reset, but my next move is to get on the phone with D* and demand another box. What else is there to say. For SOME OF US, this launch has been a complete and total disaster. I know others are still chirping about the benefits and glory of the HR20, but after a long string of obviously negative posts, this one takes the cake.

Sports people often talk about teams as being great "on paper," but we all know what that means. That's exactly the case with this box. On paper, it's the best. Otherwise, it sux.

I'd go for another box, to be sure, but while you are waiting have you tried unplugging it and letting it sit for 15 min or so...then start over? (I'd still take the new one, but I would want to experiment with the old one in the mean time, just so I could develop more of a feel for what might have happened.

Good luck!

Thanks. I am going to dial up D* and request a new box. Why not? Sooner or later, I might get lucky. And you're also right, I am going to see if it rights itself. I actually called today to try and swap my H20 even up for a second HR20 for the bedroom, but the best D* retention offered was $99 plus S&H. I am definitely waiting until this thing works, whenever that may be, before I put any real money into this deal. So I said thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick with my R10 for recording on that front, and use the H20 for HD viewing.

Meantime, this is the first time it's totally failed to work, apart from all the other issues reported on the forum (I've had the BSOD, but not some of the others). That may be a hardware issue, not a result of the newest download. Meantime, I have never spent so much time and energy in the process of getting a new piece of "entertainment" gear. Other than building my MP3 collection, that is. But that's fun.

Eeek, another outright lockup? Did it come back this time, or is it a HW failure?
Not sure yet. But that is the first time it's every just flat out failed, but I have no idea if its the HW or the new download. Taking a wait and see, as always. Just glad I didn't depend on the HR20 as the only DVR. I feel for those folks who put their faith in that approach.

Screen just went blank again, but this time, changing the channel freed it up. I think its an HW issue this time. I am keeping it on MPEG-2 channels to eliminate any local HD issues with the blank screens.

I edited your thread title, as this is more specific to the DC release.

Other is the main tracking thread have reported similar experiences.

In a related issue, since the download, when I change channels there is a clear delay in the time I press the button and the picture appears on the screen, really bad lag time. Never had that either. Oddly enough, this is relatively new, as it didn't seem to be happening yesterday, after the download, but it is happening today. I would say it's another software issue, not a HW failure. But I have no clear way of knowing. Getting a new HR20 is akin to just asking for the same issues, but I might as well before I waste my time setting up Series Links, etc., again. Also, if anyone expects to "bank" stuff in MyVOD, I'd forget about it for the time being.

Depending on which channel you are leaving, and which one you are going to... there has always been a delay... sometimes 3-5 seconds.

Never noticed it as this pronounced, so figured it might be related to this latest issue with the box locking up on local HDs.

I've never noticed this lag either, but haven't had a chance to try 0xDC yet. Last night, we watched Studio 60 off my laptop (the working DVR)

It's sad that it was easier for me to "steal" TV off the internet than record/watch it with my HR20.

Yeah. Understand. Now, I'm wondering if I am about to enter an entire new HR20 Twilght Zone with this lockup issue. As I said, I'm out of the anger/irritation phase, into the "this is actually getting funny" phase. Not sure what phase is next.

Not being in the MPEG-4/HD Locals market yet, I have this sinking feeling that a bunch of the issues are related to two things: MPEG-4 datastream problems (and the HR20's inability to resolve errors or anomalies in same), subtle HDMI incompatibilities.

Obviously there are other things, as well. It is an adventure to be sure. I'm just soooo grateful that we don't have HD Locals here yet. It may be a bit irrational, but I consider MPEG-4 to be a virus for this box at this point.

I'm anxiously (both in a good and bad way) waiting for the OTA.

Am I to take from your last comments that you got it working again by unplugging it and letting it sit a bit, and then starting over, or just what did you do to recover from a completely unresponsive box?

It's working after a reset. Didn't unplug. But what you say makes sense about MPE\G4. Wonder if othes without local HD stations are having fewer issues? And I did have a small blank screen blip along the way, with a channel change unsticking it.

Recorded CSI last night on CBS MPEG4 while I was watching the baseball game watched CSI after the game no problems.

Have had the 700 box for about a week and a half now. Using a triple LNB and not bothering with getting he 5 and the locals over D*...yet. Waiting PATIENTLY for the OTA, so we're still MPEG 2 all the way. I've had some anomolies like having a program drop out to black while playing from the real time buffer at the day-time hour the schedule says the program is no longer available. Simply put, we missed the last 15 mins of a movie playing out of the buffer just because the schedule hit the "hour" and the movie was "over". No amount of poking would retrieve the last minutes. Other than that the box has been resonalbly stable. We have had no caller ID issues and we're DSL and taking the line through a filter.
