Is there any way to transfer a recording to A VHS tape or a DVD via a DVD recorder? If not will that capability be enabled anytime?

Yes. You can connect the DVR's audio/video outputs to the matching inputs on your VCR or DVD Recorder and copy programs from the DVR. You can do the same to your PC if it has a video capture card and software.
So while your playing back you push record on your recording device? Tivo had a record to VCR option does the HR20 have something like that?

Yes you just push the record on the recording device.
You had to do the same on the TiVo units... unless you had a T-60 and specific models of Sony VCR (very few people had that combination).

The Save to VCR function on the TiVo, did nothing more then put the TiVo into a special playback mode that silenced any bings/bongs and dialog message boxes on the screen. And also didn't allow remote control commands on the first press (you had to hit them twice)

No, you can only get something off the HD by playing it and recording off either the S-Video or Composite connections. You can simultaneously watch and record something live, (to your vcr/dvd recorder) of course.

What you can't do is record a program to the HR20 and the DVD/VCR recorder unless you are watching it "live". When you schedule a recording it records in the background tuner. You can play some games with dummy dual recording, forcing what you want to the foreground tuner, but that's a PITA too.

I have about 5 movies I want to move to my DVD Recorder and haven't done it, because I essentially have to give up use of the HR20 for the 2 hour period to record the movie (by playing it back on the HR20). It's not real convenient.

I'm guessing that feature involved the Tivo box controlling the VCR? The HR20 doesn't have the ability to control other devices such as a VCR or DVD recorder, and I imagine it never will. As litzdog said, you can do this manually. All outputs on the back of the HR20 are live at the same time, so you have a variety to choose from to hook up to your external recording device.

Edit: Not 1, but 2 people beat me to posting a reply...

Forgive my ignorance since I am a salesman not a Tech guy but..... what happens if you record an HD program, like Discovery HD Theater and then try to transfer that to a non HD DVD recorder, will it work and be watchable when replaying on a standard DVD player?

It will work... the HR20 will push out the 480i signal.
It will be an SD Recording though.

Just to add a little to what Earl said, if the HD program was wide screen format (which they all seem to be), it will squeeze the picture rather than crop it. The people will look taller and thinner than normal. I recorded a Blue Oyster Cult concert from HDNet to VCR, and with the compression, Buck Dahrma looked 10 years younger!

The HR10-250, in its Record to VCR mode also inserted the program name, date, time, and channel recorded into the front of the program to be dumped. I think that's a very nice idea.
